Mount Zirkel Wilderness is truly spectacular. If you have a chance to venture in, take it. This area is only accessible a few months a year. The Slavonia Trailhead is about 1 hour from Steamboat Springs. The Zirkel Circle is a popular day hike but it is a strenuous almost 12 miles loop. Gilpin Lake is the crown jewel.

Mount Zirkel is the highest peak in the mountain range near Steamboat Springs. It caps out at 12,182 feet, and the surrounding wilderness area is one of the prime destinations in Colorado for backcountry adventures.

1 hours drive from Steamboat Springs. If you like to hike and are looking for adventure, this is the spot for you. Many of the hikes have creek crossing that can be thigh deep, so prepare for it. Pack warm clothing (hat, gloves, raincoat) as you will for alpine hikes.
