This location heading up Buffalo Pass overs the start of many great hiking and mountain biking trail. Spring Creek downhill starts here and if you take a sharp left shortly after starting the trail, you will head onto a local gem, Flash of Gold. Children and those looking to hike shorter distances will like Panorama or Fiddlehead.

Near Steamboat Lake is Pearl Lake, a local favorite. This small pristine lake nestled in the mountains is worth a visit. There is a trail to hike around the edge of the lake. This lake doesn't allow motorized vehicles but you can float, kayak, or paddleboard. There are SUPs available for rent at the boat loading dock.

One of the most popular hikes in the area. From its peak is a historic firehouse and some of the most spectacular 360 degree views of the area. It is about one hour from Steamboat and the last quarter mile to the trailhead needs an appropriate vehicle. Of note, the top of Hahn's Peak is loose rock scree so be sure you wear appropriate footwear.

Mount Zirkel Wilderness is truly spectacular. If you have a chance to venture in, take it. This area is only accessible a few months a year. The Slavonia Trailhead is about 1 hour from Steamboat Springs. The Zirkel Circle is a popular day hike but it is a strenuous almost 12 miles loop. Gilpin Lake is the crown jewel.

Fish Creek Falls is a must visit on your trip to Steamboat Springs. Located at the top of Fish Creek Falls Road, you pay a $5 fee per car, park in the Upper Lot, and then take a 1/4 mile hike to the bridge overlooking the falls. There is also a short overlook hike that is paved. This is awesome all year round. On a really busy day, you'll find cars parked all along the road to the Lower Lot, so best to avoid weekends and get there early, especially in the Summer. If you are up for more of a challenge, in the summer months take the trek up to the Upper Falls, which is a fairly strenuous 2.5 mile hike one way. The Upper Falls are more spectacular that the lower in my opinion.

For Kids

OTHS is a community center located right in downtown Steamboat Springs. It does have a hot spring available for those that don't want to venture out to Strawberry Park Hot Springs. Kids love the large heated pools, splash pad, wading pool, and water slides. A new addition after re-modeling is the climbing wall. The gym also does offer childcare, massages, and fitness equipment and classes.

This hike is popular with all ages but it is an especially nice trail for children. It has very little elevation change, follows right along Spring Creek, and is accessible most of the year. Although the trail is almost 6 miles long, about 1 mile in brings you to a picnic shelter and two ponds, which is a popular spot to rest, have a snack, and turnaround.

A little gem at Steamboat Lake is the Tombstone Trail. This is 1.1 miles and fabulous for little kids. There is also a pamphlet with information to read at 11 markers around the trail, which helps keep the kids engaged. The highlight of the hike is the historic tombstone of the first settlers to the area. Steamboat Lake also has a small beach!

THE LAND UP in SUMMER! At the Steamboat Ski Resort base there is plenty to entertain your kiddos. Burgess Creek flows through the area with large rocks to climb on, chairs for relaxing, and two small sand beaches. The Outlaw Mountain Coaster is a bit pricey but worth a ride. Also The Land Up offers several games and thrills for young and old alike including mini golf, ropes course, extreme trampoline, climbing wall, bounce house, and more.

Steamboat Springs boasts a pretty great library for such a small town. It is right on the Yampa River at 13th and Lincoln Ave. If you have small children you are trying to entertain, this could be your solution. The Children's Library has story time every weekday as well as toys and of course, books, to help entertain the kids.
