A nice place, the highland of Baunei called Golgo. You can find there wild animalts, Saint Peter church, natural water pools, different paths easy on foot to reach the Golgo chasm or a stone face of a man.

ITALIANO: La vertiginosa altezza di 270 metri fa di su Sterru, la voragine a una campata più profonda d’Europa. Generatosi nel cuore dell’altopiano del Golgo (400 metri di altitudine), all’interno del territorio di Baunei, l’abisso è un luogo denso di richiami, misteri e antiche leggende, da brividi sulla pelle: si diceva fosse tana di un serpente (su scultone), la cui minaccia fu allontanata con la costruzione (XVII secolo) della vicina chiesa di san Pietro. In realtà, la cavità è habitat del mite geotritone sardo, anfibio ambientatosi qui, al quale fanno compagnia il ragno porrohomma e alcuni crostacei terrestri. In principio fu ritenuto un vulcano (nelle carte topografiche compariva come ‘Cratere vecchio’) e profondo 100-150 metri, ma la sua esplorazione completa (1957) ha svelato l’enorme abisso carsico creato da fenomeni erosivi. Sterru significa, infatti, sia ‘discesa’ che ‘scavo’, un termine comune ad altri toponimi ogliastrini e barbaricini. Oggi è esplorato solo da speleologi esperti. La voragine si apre all’improvviso sull’altopiano, a 13 chilometri dall’abitato di Baunei. L’imboccatura dell’inghiottitoio è fatta di rocce scure basaltiche, la parte interna di pietre calcaree bianche. Il diametro è di 25 metri che diventano 40 sul fondo. È raggiungibile a piedi attraverso un paesaggio affascinante: colate laviche sul calcare, felci e lecci ammantati di muschio e piccoli stagni (piscinas). È un museo a cielo aperto: pozzi per celebrare riti ancestrali, domus de Janas, che attestano al Neolitico la presenza umana, tombe di giganti e quasi venti complessi nuragici, posti come sentinelle agli accessi della valle. Una complessa rete di fortificazione costruita dal 1500 a.C. in poi: l’impressione è di passeggiare nella preistoria. ENGLISH: Its vertiginous height of 270 metres makes su Sterru Europe’s deepest single-span chasm. Formed in the heart of the Golgo plateau (400 metres high), within the Baunei territory, the chasm is a place filled with mysteries and ancient legends that will give you goose bumps: according to legend, it was once a snake’s lair (su scultone), whose menace was warded off by the building, in the 17th century, of the church of San Pietro nearby. The cavity is actually the habitat of the tame Sardinian cave salamander, an amphibian adapted to this location, accompanied by the porrohomma spider and a few terrestrial crustaceans. The chasm was initially believed to be a volcano (in old topographic maps it was identified as “Old Crater”) 100-150 metres deep, but its complete exploration, in 1957, revealed the enormous karstic abyss created by erosion. Sterru, in fact, means both “descending slope” and “pit”, and is a term commonly used to other place names in Ogliastra and Barbagia. Today, it is only explored by experienced speleologists. The chasm opens suddenly on the plateau, 13 kilometres from the town of Baunei. The mouth of the chasm is made of dark basaltic rocks, while the inner part is formed by white limestone. Its 25 metres of diameter increase to 40 in the bottom. It can be reached on foot my crossing a fascinating landscape: lava flow on limestone, ferns and holm oaks covered in moss, small ponds (piscinas). It is an open-air museum: wells to celebrate ancestral rituals, domus de Janas, which attest to human presence since the Neolithic, Giants’ tombs and almost twenty Nuragic complexes, placed as sentinels at the accesses to the valley. A complex network of fortresses built after 1500 BC: it feels like a walk through pre-history. DEUTSCH: Das Naturdenkmal des Golgo von Baunei, auch Su Sterru genannt, was im Sardischen „der Schlund heißt, liegt auf der Golgo-Hochebene etwa 400 Meter über dem Meeresspiegel. Es handelt sich um einen Karstschlund, eine der tiefsten Grotten Sardiniens und nahezu einzigartig in Europa. Er erreicht eine Tiefe von 270 Meter und hat einen elliptischen Querschnitt. Im mittleren Abschnitt ist er bis zu 25 Meter weit. Der Schlund wird von einer interessanten Tierwelt bevölkert, darunter der Sardische Höhlensalamander, die Porrohomma-Spinne und auf dem Land lebende Krebstiere wie die Trischoniscus-Assel. Es una garganta de origen cárstico, una de las grutas más profundas de Cerdeña y, probablemente, entre las más particulares de Europa. Alcanza una altura de 270 metros con una sección horizontal elíptica que alcanza los 25 metros de diámetro en el tramo central. La vorágine aloja una interesante fauna, en la que destaca un anfibio llamado geotritón sardo, la araña Porrohomma y los crustáceos terrestres del género Trischoniscus. FRANCAIS: Le monument naturel du Golgo de Baunei, appelé aussi Su Sterru - qui en sarde signifie "gouffre" -, se situe sur le haut-plateau du même nom à environ 400 m au-dessus du niveau de la mer. Il s'agit d'une gorge d'origine karstique, une des plus profondes en Sardaigne et très probablement parmi les plus singulières en Europe. Elle atteint une hauteur de 270 m avec une section horizontale elliptique qui fait jusqu'à 25 m dans sa partie centrale. Ce gouffre est l'habitat d'une faune très intéressante comme l'amphibien appelé le géotriton sarde, l'araignée Porrhomma et les isopodes terrestre de la famille Trichoniscus.
