The Kaunas Ghetto was liquidated 75 years ago. Erected in 1984, this monument by A. Ambraziunas is by far the largest memorial of the tragic period of Lithuanian history.
Many defencive bunkers are located across Kaunas city and one of them is now turned into a museum to represent the history of World War I, Nazi's crimes and repressions performed by NKVD.
The Ninth Fort is one of the defences of Kaunas fortress and a historical and architectural monument protected by the state.
A poignant memorial to the tens of thousands of people, mainly Jews, who were murdered by the Nazis, the excellent Museum of the Ninth Fort, 7km north of Kaunas, comprises an old WWI-era fort and the bunker-like church of the damned. Displays cover deportations of Lithuanians by the Soviets and graphic photo exhibitions track the demise of Kaunas' Jewish community. Various guided tours of different aspects of the fort are offered.
