SUMMARY: Get your Hawaiian food wiki-wiki, conveniently located just two minutes drive from the Alohacienda. FOOD: This is the most authentic Hawaiian Bar-B-Q you'll find in the Gorge. I've lived two years in Hawaii (plus countless vacation visits), and having Lilo's right down the hill from us is like having our own Hawaiian Bro' next door who loves to cook! DRINK: Sodas and juices. AMBIANCE: Café-style, the place is smallish and unassuming. It has a little outdoor patio next to their outdoor Bar-B-Q station - great for summer or sunny calm day.

COFFEE: Their espressos are nice and strong, but not too bitter. Baristas make artistic froth designs. FOOD: They offer great sandwiches and salads, all very fresh. It's all made to order, and when busy, it can take 10 minutes or more to get your food....be patient, it's worth it. AMBIANCE: Modern European cafe, bright and cheery. This place has a great energetic vibe, with indoor as well as outdoor seating. Noisy and clattery when busy - but in a good way.

SUMMARY: Tucked in the heart of downtown Hood River is this grunge-essential coffee house, serving sweet snacks and jittery java. COFFEE: Stumptown beans, their espressos are robust, almost medicinal strength! Zombies will certainly be resurrected here. Baristas make artistic froth designs. FOOD: Limited to snacks, such as cookies and muffins. AMBIANCE: Like a university underground hangout, this place inspires playful pontification. The interior space has depth, with only north-facing windows, so it is prone to have dimmed diffused lighting. Have your coffee, sit, and study your calculus for a couple of hours. Or hang with your friends to plan out your next epic Northwest adventure!

SUMMARY: Make your way east through downtown Hood River to the end of Oak Street, before it bends, you will find this unique Hood River spot- Ground Espresso Bar. COFFEE: They roast their own coffee, and it is truly special. Espressos are as rich and dark as liquid ebony, and thick like molasses. This is where ordering a single shot of espresso (instead of a double) has ever made any sense! Still, go ahead with a double... FOOD: They bake their own pastries, and make sandwiches to order. All very fresh with edgy flavorful ingredients. AMBIANCE: This is a very hip retro 1950's style café, conducive to long stays after many mugs of coffee. It has nice big south-facing windows.

SUMMARY: You know you are in a totally rad town when you see a coffee house that serves real food with an outdoor fireplace patio, and it shares half the building with a really cool bike shop (Dirty Fingers Bike Shop). And the bike shop sells beer in the afternoon (4pm)....but, wait, there's more... COFFEE: Great locally roasted coffee and espressos. FOOD: The menu is truly eclectic and sophisticated, and includes burgers, ramen, tacos. Good breakfast selection too. Everything's fresh, with locally sourced ingredients. DRINK: Starting at 4:00pm, Kickstand Kitchen's "Handle Bar" starts serving wines and cocktails. AMBIANCE: This place is casual but sophisticated. Great relaxing groove.

SUMMARY: For a long while, this was the downtown hotspot for families and friends of all ages, offering pizza, beers and a movie (Skylight Theater). And it still is a great location, extremely busy at times--therein lies the rub, for with great success comes great responsibility, and that's hard if your local work force is limited. FOOD: Management has great recipes for superb pizzas, and fantastic calzones rubbed with olive oil, but the help doesn't always get it right, especially when it's crowded (long waits, overcooked/undercooked, errors). DRINK: Beer on tap, sodas. AMBIANCE: Cafe-style, large family-freindly space, big tables, palyroom for kids, and a nice movie theater in the back.

SUMMARY: A sandwich shop like no other, puts the Subway ch-ch-chain to sh-sh-shame. Seriously, I can't go to Subway anymore, I'm a born-again-NYCsub eater. FOOD: They offer a short list of quintessential sandwiches, including grilled meats. My favorite: The Bronx (grilled turkey&cheese). Also, legendary fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies that have been known to walk themselves into your mouth. DRINK: Sodas on tap or in cans. AMBIANCE: Small café, seating upstairs loft, or outside on sidewalk. Great friendly staff.

SUMMARY: This is an itsy-bitsy ice-cream parlor, carrying a delicious national brand (out of Tennessee). Mike's Ice Cream is quaint, unique, and a veritable Hood River landmark since 1986. FOOD: ICE CREAM!!!! (is that food?) DRINK: melted ice cream all over your wrist, or milkshakes. AMBIANCE: Tucked away inconspicuous and camouflaged to look like part of its neighboring business (The Ruddy Duck), Mike's is easy to miss as you drive on by, except for the colorful lawn chairs, red sunbrellas, and crowds of people sittin' on the grass with flowers in their hair said, "Hey, Boy, do you wanna ice scream?" Led Zeppelin notwithstanding, this place is rockin' in the summertime for the family.
