Woody Bay, on the rugged Exmoor Coast, certainly lives up to its name. The rocky cove is backed by steep, heavily wooded cliffs. The walk down to the beach is as much of a delight as the cove itself; the path zig-zags through the woods, passing some amusing signage on the way.

An ancient castle and comfortable country home with dramatic vistas and subtropical gardens Dramatically sited on a wooded hill, a castle has existed here since at least Norman times, with an impressive medieval gatehouse and ruined tower giving a reminder of its turbulent history. The castle that you see today became a lavish country home during the 19th century for the Luttrell family, who lived here for 600 years. The terraced garden displays varieties of Mediterranean and subtropical plants, while the tranquil riverside wooded garden below, with its natural play area, leads to the historic working watermill. There are panoramic views over the Bristol Channel and surrounding countryside from the castle and grounds.

The lovely 4.2-mile scenic route from Porlock towards Lynton dates from the 1840s and was built to offer a more gentle alternative to the infamously steep Porlock Hill. Today, starting in Porlock, some two miles from Porlock Weir, the scenic route twists through idyllic woodland, offering tantalising glimpses through the trees to Porlock Bay. As the road climbs, never at more than 1 in 14, it passes the toll house where a modest toll (currently £2.50) is collected.
