Food scene

Oaks Club & Cedar Bar A great newer addition to the Darien Riverfront. Experience an exquisite melange of locally sourced, wild Georgia shrimp, impeccably aged, premium beef, and globally inspired dishes, all elegantly infused with distinct Southern flair.
This is my favorite place for fried shrimp and many other things but I'm stuck on the fried shrimp! There is nobody that does it better. It's a family owned hole in the wall where all the locals go. I can assure you trying to eat one entree by yourself isn't a good idea. It's so much food it's better to split if possible. Also, don't wait until 6 p.m. to go or you'll be waiting with everyone else for 2-3 hours. I recommend going at 5 p.m. and you should have no issues getting in.

This is a great place to buy wine, cheese and many other fantastic items. We love the wine slushies in the summer. Also, a great place to hang out on the swing outside talking with other travelers or to get a real flavor of the area go to the back and enjoy meeting up with the locals. It's like a present day Cheers!

Another of my favorites this place has a bit of ambiance. It's located right on the Darien River. There is a bar on one side with an open air area where you can eat. That's my favorite side. Some nights they have music. The food is consistently good!

If you love chocolate and icecream you have to go to Sugar Marsh. The chocolate is delicious and all in coastal shapes. The icecream is delicious. This place isn't good for the waistline but it's worth the indulgence. If you have will power it's great just to go in and look at the beauty of presentation.

1806. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Square follows the concept of early town planning utilized by James Oglethorpe in Savannah in 1733. It is one of several planned squares in the community. Throughout the 19th Century, Vernon Square was the business, cultural, social and religious center of Darien. A number of the surviving historic homes were the residence of the lumber barons and leading merchants during the timber era when Darien was one of the top two ports on the coast.

Waterfront Park was once the site of the busiest port on the Southeast coast; in the 19th Century, a steady stream of ships entered the Port of Darien for cargoes of lumber, mostly yellow pine, bound for Europe. Nowadays you'll see the beautiful shrimp boats lined up on the Darien River

Early Georgia planter and legislator Thomas Spalding, a man of Scottish heritage, kept his mainland home on the site known as Ashantilly, or "Old Tabby." The original tabby house burned in 1937, but the current home, actually built around the tabby ruins, is the vision of William G. Haynes, Jr. who founded the Ashantilly Press. He was also the founder of the non-profit Ashantilly Center, which operates today as an educational and cultural center just outside Darien. Spalding's and Haynes' legacies are interpreted to visitors through programs, events and publications.

Christ's Chapel in Memory Park. Located in north McIntosh County, this little sanctuary has become a stop for thousands of I-95 and US Highway 17 travelers. Situated near the South Newport River, the church was constructed in 1949 by Mrs. Anges Harper, a local grocer. She wanted the chapel to serve as a place of meditation and rest for weary travelers. Although small, the structure is not lacking in character and beauty with stained glass windows imported from England.
