An "ecological" ferry has been sailing on the Adda river for over five centuries, connecting the Lombard municipalities of Imbersago and Villa d’Adda. To make it work, just a cable stretched between the two banks, some notion of physics and the energy of a single person, who, using the force vectors of the current, manages to lead the boat, loaded with people and goods, without too much effort. Its origins date back to before the sixteenth century, when the two shores (now belonging to the provinces of Lecco and Bergamo) were respectively under the dominion of the Duchy of Milan and of the Venetian Republic. Traces of these boats can be found in various passages of literary works - including the Promessi Sposi by Alessandro Manzoni - but among the most significant testimonies there is a sketch attributed to Leonardo Da Vinci, who at the beginning of the 16th century stayed in the Duchy of Milan to dedicate himself to hydraulic studies in the Navigli area. There are no documents capable of associating the ingenious invention with the Florentine inventor, who nevertheless studied its functioning, based on a principle of decomposition of forces. The same that still today allows the "Leonardo ferry" - revisited over the years - to accompany passengers from one bank of the river to the other.
