The Little Traverse History Museum is housed in the former Pere Marquette train station, built in 1892. The building fell into disrepair after the last trains arrived in the 1960s. It was eventually taken over by the Little Traverse Historical Society and became a museum in 1971. Wonderful collection of historical documents and pictures of Emmet County as well as special collections, such as Women's Suffrage in the Petoskey area and history of the local First Nation Odawa Tribe.

The museum is located in one of the original train depots serving the summer resorters seeking relief from the city during the summer months. You'll find this modest museum worth the time as it provides a historical perspective on this area's culture and history. If you're a Hemingway fan, you'll enjoy this section of the museum. Growing up, Ernest Hemingway spent his summers at the family cottage on Walloon Lake, a few miles south of Petoskey. After serving as an ambulance driver in World War I, he returned to Petoskey in the winter of 1919-1920. Several of the Nick Adams stories take place in nearby Horton's Bay, and the satirical The Torrents of Spring is set in downtown Petoskey.

A good place to check out and learn local history while exploring Bayfront Park (because it is located within the Park).
