Having your own car is the best way to enjoy this area, since we are really removed from everything. But if you have a friend who needs to come up or get back to NYC - separate from your crew - they can always hop on a bus and it will drop them right into downtown New Paltz next to the Taxi stand. Taxi is $20 last time we used them.
