Anthracite Coal Mining Museum and mine Tour. Great place to visit. Make sure to dress up - about 50 degrees F year long! Ride a train 1000 feet into the mine, 200 feet below the surface. Not for the claustrophobic types!! Near Jim Thorpe Town - could be combined with visit to Jim Thorpe for full day great trip!! 55 minutes drive

Take a train ride into the mountain, then a guided foot tour deep into the oldest continuously operated coal mine in the world. A 19 minute drive from your stay!

This place is a great amateur museum run by passionate local volunteers. It has an amazing collection of coal mining artifacts. It's housed in a former wash shanty where miners prepared for work and cleaned up afterwards with primitive showers and a place to store their clothing. You can also opt to go in the former mine by taking a ride on an old mining car which I highly recommend.
