Stop here & walk around for 30 min - 1 hr, then drive up the road to Wupatki National Monument for a neat half day trip.
Fascinating volcanic area (Active only 1300 year ago) 20 minutes away- bring National Parks Pass. Recommend Lenox Crater 1 mile, 1 hour hike.
Sunset Crater is not too far from our tiny house. The monument and visitor center is open and you can hike the Lava Flow trail.
Plan time to enjoy the museum onsite discussing volcanos and the cinder cones of the Flagstaff vicinity. Take in a hike on sunset crater, the views of the river of lava and hikes about the lava field. Wearing closed toed shoes a must. Continue on to the Wapatki ruins to view ancient civilization…
Located a few miles north, this crater was created by a volcanic eruption 900 years ago.
