The orientated natural reserve of the Saline of Trapani and Paceco is a Sicilian regional nature reserve set up in 1995, covering almost 1000 hectares in the territory of the municipalities of Trapani and Paceco. [1] The reserve, in which the ancient salt extraction is carried out, is an important wetland area that protects many species of migratory birds. It is managed by WWF Italia.

Trapani Salt Pans Natural Reserve is an authentic hidden treasure. This is not (not only) a postcard to send home. It is a real natural reserve were hundreds of migratory birds live, nest, and feed every year. Endemic plants are also easy to find and observe among the salt extraction pool system dated back since the Arabic domination (roughly one thousand years ago). Worth to visit especially around Sunrise or Sunset hours. Magical place and colours.

Along the coast between Trapani e Marsala lies this evocative landscape of saline (shallow salt pools) and decommissioned mulini ( windmills). The salt from these marshes is considered Italy's finest and has been big business for centuries; today, only a cottage industry remains providing for Italy's more descerning dinner tables. The best time to visit is summer, when the sun turns the saltpans rosy pink and makes the salt heaps shimmer. In winter, the heaps – covered with tiles and plastic tarpaulins to keep out the rain – are considerably less picturesque. The most attractive stretches of coast are protected within two wetland preserves: Riserva Naturale Saline Trapani e Paceco to the north near Trapani and Riserva Naturale dello Stagnone to the south near Marsala. The latter encompasses San Pantaleo island – home to the noted archaeologiacal site of Mozia – and the larger Isola Lunga, which protects the shallow waters of Stagnone lagoon.

The Reserve includes a coastal strip covering almost a thousand hectares. A large part of the Reserve is made up of privately owned salt pans, where salt extraction is still practiced according to traditional techniques in use for centuries. Of considerable landscape impact the presence of numerous windmills used to pump the water between the basins. Beyond this ethno-anthropological value, the site is characterized by being one of the most important coastal wetlands of western Sicily, a resting place for many species of migratory birds.
