Berkhamsted Castle was built during the Norman conquest of England in 1066. After William the Conqueror defeated the Anglo-Saxons at the Battle of Hastings he advanced from the coast, across the Thames Valley and north into Hertfordshire.
This 13th Century ruin is just a ten minute walk away (down the hill, along station road and underneath the railway). Entry is free and it is a great spot for a walk or for a picnic. Children will enjoy the large grassy expanse and the opportunity to kick a ball around or throw a frisbee.
