Snow Summit is not only great in the winter for skiing and snowboarding but has activities on location throughout the year. They do outdoor movies, have events onsite, and have areas to bike and hike. During the summer the Sky Chair will take you to the top to hike or mountain bike during the summer (2 free kids per paying adult-check website as this could change).

The Big Bear Snow Play, Speedway and ropes course is just across the street from our house. They provide inner tubes and make their own snow when nature hasn't provided quite enough to keep the runs packed with snow for a great day of tubing. It's so close you could stay all day or go back to the house to rest, eat, etc. and go back for more fun. They are offering night tubing with fun lighting as well (brrrr). Dress warm for that.

If you have kids, this is a fun place to visit. Your entry fee includes a petting zoo, a pony ride for the little ones (which is really a guided ride on a gentle horse), a hay ride around the property, a bounce house, and horse shoe pits. We also received a tour of the stables, met the horses and got a quick roping lesson. They also host Goat Yoga!

There are multiple spots along the lake where you can park and walk down to the lake to set up for a great day by the lake for swimming, fishing, or just relaxing. The East Boat ramp has free parking and easy access to the shore. There are several picnic areas along the north shore that require a parking pass (you can pick up at the discovery center) for 5.00 but also have great picnic areas and access to the shore. Or...you can just park on the road and it's a hop skip and a jump to the water :)

Bear Mountain, along with Snow Summit, are the premier ski and snowboarding resorts for Southern California and located in Big Bear Lake. They both host other activities throughout the year so check their website for updates. Bear Mountain also hosts a freestyle park, usually filled with ambitious and adventurous snowboarders, and in the past has been a bit cheaper than Snow Summit for lessons. You can access Bear Mountain on the back roads and avoid traffic on Big Bear Blvd on busy days so check your maps and cut out the extra wait time.

If you don't want to wait for your ski or snowboard rentals at the mountain, I recommend this place because they are super close to the house and have always been very friendly. They are cheaper and faster than renting at the slopes and their location is two blocks away, on the corner of Big Bear Blvd and Division, across from the Motel 6.

Great place for rentals- boats, kayaks, etc. We've found this to be the best value for pontoon rentals. Friendly staff and didn't have any extra fees- everything, including gas was included upfront. Please check their website because details could change.

Bluff lake is found off of Mill Creek Road. This road is usually not accessible during the winter months. The road itself can be quite bumpy, 4x4 recommended, but not required. It is worth the beautiful scenery if you can find this gem. There is lots of hiking along this road as well, and a second train the Castle Rock. Bluff Lake is beautiful and has a flat walking trail that goes around the lake- a 1.9 mile loop. Check a map before you go...you more than likely will not have cell service and I've missed the turn a couple of times myself...but the scenery is beautiful and its worth the trip.

Want to enjoy views of the lake as you walk? The Alpine Pedal Path is a popular and easy path that takes you along the North Side of the lake. This is a paved path and is great for walking or biking. This is considered an easy trail. You can park along the road or at one of the picnic/hiking areas (usually requires an adventure pass to park in a parking lot). The path starts about 1.5 miles from the house off of Stanfield Cuttoff.

You can actually walk to the trail from the house...or you can drive about a mile to the other end of the trail to the parking lot. Stanfield Marsh Boardwalk strolls along the marsh with beautiful views and wooden bridges above the water.

Food scene

The Himalayan Restaurant feature excellent cuisine from India and Nepal. It is located in the Big Bear Lake Village. The website boasts you can order for takeout as well, but the food is seriously good. I had to look up Indian recipes to try at home after eating here...but so far, they haven't come out quite as good.

Red Baron has great pizza (and other great picks on their menu) and deliver if you are looking for a no cooking, night in. They are located within 2 miles of the house, in the Stater Brothers parking lot and have multiple TV's that are usually playing live sports games. So for those of you that can't go without missing your favorite football team play on Sunday (or whenever), Red Baron's is close and will probably have your game on. There are a few video games for kids to play. They usually get pretty busy on game days.

Local Tropicali You may not be expecting excellent island food up on a mountain but you should...this place is great. Fun atmosphere, the service is great-and fun, and the food is excellent. If you haven't had great poke, teriyaki, pork in a while...or just want to try it...this place won't disappoint. Last time we went, everyone was in there for their second or third day in a row, and the service is excellent.

Very tiny, but very good. If you're looking for a good burger, than this is your place. The Broadway Cafe is located within walking distance from the house (But you have to cross over Big Bear Blvd). Prices are reasonable- better than most in Big Bear- and I believe they have the best burgers in town. ..and best ranch dressing.

Neighborhoods

The village is the premier tourist spot and the central, walk-able location for lots of restaurants and shops. During the winter, all lit up, it looks an awful lot like every Christmas Hallmark movie. (They actually filmed one here recently, but I'm not recommending the movie :))The streets are lined with lights, the trees decorated, and fire pits along the main strip so you can stop to warm yourself along the way. The village is recommended at anytime, but it's extra special during the winter. There are usually lots of activities on the weekends during the day - art displays, BBQ competition, Wine Walk...but you'll have to check the Big Bear Calendars for these special events.
