World heritage
On 26 July 2021, the New Dutch Water Line was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as an extension of the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Gorinchem is the largest authentic fortress in the Dutch Water Line, and, together with the Vestingdriehoek, it is a true icon of this World Heritage Site.
The Royal Dutch Touring Club (ANWB) has declared Gorinchem the most beautiful fortified city in the Netherlands in 2021.
Stadhuis Gorinchem
Gorinchem, nestled between the Linge and Merwede rivers, is truly a fortified city. Early in the 17th century, this medieval city was ‘modernised’ with brand-new fortifications. The original city earthwork ramparts with bastions are almost completely intact, making Gorinchem the largest authentic fortified city in the Netherlands.

It goes without saying that, while enjoying a snack or a drink in the open air, you can enjoy the wonderful spring and summer sun. The number of seats has been increased with the heated conservatory. It is also wonderful to relax here during the winter days

The Hoofdwacht on Grote Markt 6, has been one of the most famous meeting places in Gorinchem and the surrounding area for over 16 years. The restaurant is big enough, there is always a seat available. There are several rooms in our building and plenty of corners. This way you get that real living room feeling.
You can enjoy the terrace all year round. In winter the terrace is (partially) covered and heated. On our terrace you can experience the flavors and scents of all seasons

The Hoofdwacht on Grote Markt 6, has been one of the most famous meeting places in Gorinchem and the surrounding area for over 16 years.
