If coming up in winter...

1. Consider buying snow chains or cables before you come up. During winter, it is legally required that you have a set in your vehicle 2. If you're unfamiliar with installing chains, practice it before you leave home. It's much better to learn to put them on in your driveway in dry weather, rather than by the side of the highway, in the dark and while freezing. 3. If you're planning to ski or snowboard, Costco has an online deal for their members. This season (2019-20), you can buy 4 lift tickets for about $299--much better than the $108 per person price at Bear Mountain/Snow Summit.

...coming up to BBL in summer time

If you live in Southern California, it is very "freeway close". Once you get to the beginning of the road uphill, Big Bear is an easy 45 minute drive. Plus, since the temps are usually 20 degrees cooler than inland SoCal, it is a welcome breather.
