Food Scene

Everything in Plytra is authentic, Greek cuisine. Wherever you dine, always ask for the specials, as these are usually more like home-cooked Greek food that Yaya makes. This guide covers Plytra, Monemvasia (Old and New town), Gerakas-Limeni, Karavostasti, and a few other tasty spots. And if you drink wine, go for Monemvasia when you can.
This is the best known spot in town, as it occupies a prime location at Plytra's award winning white-sand beach. It is a restaurant and bar often playing hit music, open well into the night and sponsoring occasional nightlife events and beach volleyball competitions. It has many sunbeds/umbrellas for rent as well. However, off-season or before 11am, it is peaceful.

According to Lonely Planet: Chrisovoulo aims higher than the other restaurants hereabouts, Chrisovoulo raises expectations. But it delivers: it prepares creative salads and various delicacies like veal with morel sauce or risotto with siglino (salted pork) from the Mani, all served in an intimate, stylish environment. Service is professional, the sea views fantastic, and there's a serious local wine list.

Mystras- A UNESCO World Heritage site One hour and thirty minutes from Blue Seas Villa brings you to the ancient city of Mystras, which sits on the steep slopes of Mount Taygetus, towering over the Laconian plain. The ruins transport you into the well-preserved remains of a city and castle where the last Byzantine Emperor was crowned. Moderate stair climbing leads you through endless archways, seven churches (one with a lovely garden and still occupied by nuns), and grand vistas.

Diros is ranked in the top 3 caves in the world with its unique stalagmites and stalactites. On this 40-minute boat tour, we go through passages and galleries with glimmering formations. The tour of this extensive cave system finishes by foot through a 300 meter long (984 ft.) passageway. Bring a bathing suit and take a dip at the white pebble beach, and choose a spot to create a memory to bring home with you.

Just 1 hour away from Plytra lies what is known as “Little Mystras,” a medieval castle in the foothills of Parnonas Mountain. There is evidence of civilization here that dates as far back as 1800 BC. Geraki Castle has lots of different levels and some steep slopes but is a moderately easy ascent. We enter from the lower village and climb up to explore byzantine architecture, mansions of bygone eras, and small Orthodox churches with well-preserved frescoes. Geraki Castle is a gem that you would very likely have to ourselves from 8 am until closing time at 3 pm. The views of the open valley below shining in golden sunlight are worth the trip to this rural village and historical site.

The largest town in the southern Peloponnese is an hour way from Blue Seas Villa. According to legend, Gytheio is where Helen of Sparta and Paris spent the night before their departure to Troy. Today, few traces of ancient Greece remain, making it a more “modern” city and lively, colorful harbor town in the Laconian Gulf. Gytheio is characterized by its long promenade with colorful fishing boats, waterfront tavernas and ouzeries, narrow streets, many stairways, and unique shopping. The neoclassical architecture of the many mansions lining the hillside also gives this city great visual depth. We love it because this authentic port town is yet to be raided by tourists on land, even though international travel writers rave about the seafood here.

The village of Kyparissi has been referred to as the most beautiful village in Greece, so beautiful, that it made the coffee table book. Until the 1970s, it was accessible only by yacht to the rich and frequent, royal visitors, as was much of the Peloponnese because of the challenging topography. The secluded village comes slowly into view beneath the azure sea as you descend down the hairpin turns. You arrive at a little enclave where layered and dramatic limestone cliffs tower above terra cotta roofs, and classic Greek homes line the dock and picture-perfect, white pebble beach. Today, arriving by car is not for the faint of heart, but driven with care, it is perfectly safe. The village is also a much-heralded rock-climbing destination and known for its plentiful hiking paths. Question is, what inspires you - layered, colorful cliffs on small beaches that are practically ours, or pristine, azure and aquamarine waters glimmering against village architecture?

Take a stroll down from the villa and visit this historic site. You can snorkel it, or walk the land. Modern-day Plytra is Ancient Asopos, which once was a thriving and prosperous port town until it sank into Xili after an earthquake in 365AD. It was a League of Free Laconian's member from the 1st century BC, had its own currency, and, recently, a temple dedicated to Hercules has been identified. Under Roman rule, Asopos was a major center on the imperial Roman road. The ruins contain tombs, at least two bathhouses, reservoirs, and mosaic floors made from locally excavated marble. The view of the Aegean Sea with mountains in the distance is spectacular. It’s also likely you will find some shards of ancient pottery or even an ancient coin! The ancient coins depicted the gods Dionysus, Poseidon, and Nemesis. Dionysus was the ruling god of Laconia, as our region has the most fertile lands in Greece. In fact, it is known that there a temple dedicated to Dionysus here, but its exact location has yet to be found.

This beach is a local favorite. The water is deeper for swimming, so not best for small children, but there is a nice beach volleyball court where many good players can be seen and joined.

Co spakować

Practical shoes

We have practically everything you might need at Blue Seas Villa, but here are some things you might want to bring. In the evening, the weather can be a little cool, compared to the hot summer days. Pack a sweater and a pashmina. It's also great to have to cover your shoulders if you want to visit the churches. Shoes: We recommend shoes with good traction if you going to do hiking, or climb the steps of Geraki Castle, Monemvasia, or Mystras. Water Shoes: While our beach has perfect, sugary, sand, some others have rocks. These might be practical to have then.
Co spakować

Plytra is very casual, but it's always welcomed when you wear something nice for dinner. Dresses and pants or nice jeans/ dress shorts are welcomed for ladies, and men can wear nice shorts.
