It's definitely on the fancier side, but this place is excellent. It's a really charming space and the food is excellent.

Brooklyn has a LOT of "Chicken and Pizza" spots, but in my experience this place is the best of the bunch in my immediate area. If you're looking for late-night burgers or chicken fingers, this is your best option.

Open early and late, Buvette is one of the best restaurants in the whole city (and I'm not just saying that because I used to work for their sister restaurant, Via Carota). This French-inspired menu offers a delicious mix of small plates all day, and I can't recommend their breakfast menu enough.

Chef Justin Smillie has received unbelievable reviews for his California-inspired Italian cuisine ever since this place opened in 2014. OpenTable just listed their brunch as one of the Top 100 brunch spots in the WHOLE COUNTRY. And yours truly happens to serve tables there. Recommended: Crispy Whole Mushroom, the Roasted Lamb Shoulder, and the Cacio e Pepe.

Outpost is my favorite coffee shop in the area. Great backyard, excellent coffee and tea, solid food menu. If you're looking for a cafe to do some work in, I recommend this quite a bit.

This place is as weird as it is delicious. One of the best kept secrets in Chinatown. Often the vibe inside is really strange (no music, sometimes you're the only diner in the whole place), but the food is SUPER delicious and very affordable. Do family style dining and be sure to tip well.

One of my favorite sushi spots in the city. If you're exploring this area of Williamsburg, I highly recommend checking it out. Not the widest selection to choose from, but everything they have is very well done.

If you have a few extra bucks and want to do drop-off service for your laundry, Joeal is excellent. The service is really friendly, they do a great job, and it's right by the entrance to the train so you can drop it off on your way to the city.

Also called Jun Lee Laundromat. If you want to do laundry yourself and are low on funds, this is the place for you. It's about a 5 minute walk from my apartment. It's definitely a little run-down in appearance, but the machines work, the prices are low-to-average for the area, and the staff is always willing to help if something goes wrong (although there is a little bit of a language barrier to navigate if English is your primary language).

Entertainment & Activities

BAM is a really pretty theater that shows a mix of pop culture hits and some more esoteric fare. They do a lot of retrospectives that can be an absolute blast. One of my favorite experiences here was seeing the original Carrie with a packed audience of Brooklynites.

Part of City Point Mall, Alamo Drafthouse is one of the better additions to Brooklyn in recent years. Their seats are VERY comfortable, they have strict rules about showing up on time and not using cell phones, and their food/drink menu is pretty great.

Shopping

City Point's main attractions are the Alamo Drafthouse, Trader Joe's, and - last but NOT least - the food court! We're not talking any old foodcourt: there's at least 15-20 Brooklyn-based vendors and restaurants serving a wide variety of cuisines, and they're all delicious. Pretty often I will grab a bite in the court and see a movie at Alamo (which, incidentally, also has pretty great food and alcohol).

One of Brooklyn's best thrift stores, Beacon's Closet is the gold standard for second-hand clothing stores in the borough. It can feel insufferably hip, but their selection is vast, well-priced, and often very high quality. Don't always expect the service to be friendly, but if you're down to independently search their racks you will almost definitely find some great pieces.

Parks & Nature

Some of the best views of Manhattan can be found in Brooklyn Bridge park and the surrounding neighborhood of DUMBO. There's a TON of great restaurants around the area, as well.

Between Central Park and Prospect Park, Prospect wins every time. The main reason is that it's far wider than Central Park, which means you can actually get a little lost and find some sanctuary from the hustle and bustle of the city. Also, it's pretty damn scenic and incredibly relaxing.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is one of my favorite cocktail spots in the city. The space itself is upscale and hip without feeling pretentious, and the staff is generally very friendly (which isn't always the case for bars in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint area of Brooklyn). But the best part is the cocktail menu: it's a wide array of drinks with extremely well-balanced flavors at a price that is really low for the area ($14 for a mixologist-designed cocktail is unheard of for NY). If you don't like what you see on the menu, talk to one of the mixologists: tell them your liquor preference and the flavor profile you're looking for and they'll come up with something absolutely delicious.

This gay bar is definitely a Brooklyn staple. If you're looking to down some well-drinks and take in some Brooklyn drag with fellow queer people, this is probably the spot for you. It can definitely be a little on the hipster side, so be aware of that vibe going in.

Dynaco is one of the best little bars in Bedstuy. The feel inside is very "Hipster Rustic Cabin," but they have a solid selection of liquor to choose from and a decent beer list as well. If you're drinking in Bedstuy, this is the place I recommend most.

Arts & Culture

Brooklyn Museum is one of the borough’s best lil’ cultural spots, and a lovely way to spend an afternoon. They have several beautiful permanent installations (including Judy chicago’s “The Dinner Party” and a few Kehinde Wiley’s).
