Mez is a wonderfully authentic Karoo kitchen but don't come too hungry - the meals are all prepared fresh on the spot and can take some time. But you'll find it's well worth the wait.

Ronnie's is another iconic landmark on the Route 62. Apart from being able to buy ice cold beers and cold drinks, one can also buy snacks while enjoying the really fun, zany and slightly risque decor. Famous with bikers.

The Karoo Art Hotel is one of my favourite country hotels in the whole world. It is fun, funky, arty, and a bit eccentric, but totally warm and welcoming at the same time. It has vibrant art on all its walls and a great local vibe, whilst its restaurant serves hearty food. During winter they show retro movies in their original bioskoop cinema - with popcorn thrown in. It also has a lovely pool oasis.

It has vibrant art on all its walls and a great local vibe, whilst its restaurant serves hearty food. During winter they show retro movies in their original bioskoop cinema - with popcorn thrown in. It also has a lovely pool oasis.
The Blue Cow overlooks a dam and hence is known as Barrydale's waterfront. The food is delicious and the scenery enjoyable.

The Barrydale Cellar is one of several brandy cellars in the area, and offers a lovely riverside restaurant serving up a good selection of food. If you love sour dough bread, don't forget to ask for a loaf after 2pm when they come fresh out the oven.

New ownership, so I'm not sure what the food is like as I haven't yet had a chance to sample their wares, but the Pumpkin has always been a part of the Barrydale food scene.

Excellent local craft beers and gin & tonics sipped whilst watching the sun set over the Barrydale village valley is a great way to end the day.

Parks & Nature
The Tradouw Pass is a spectacular pass through the rocky Langeberg mountains and overlooks the Buffelsjag river, with many rock pools to swim in. Locals also collect the best springwater in the world from the mountains' run offs. Tradouw is derived from a Khoi word meaning 'way of the woman.' There is the drupkelder cave with dancing weeping willow to look out for, as well as Lettie's bridge, an old wooden bridge beyond the more modern concrete and steel one of today.

Day trippers can enjoy the varying temperature pools outside of school holidays, and during the school holidays one must book to stay overnight in order to have access to the pools. The surrounding Karoo landscape is absolutely beautiful.
Absolutely stunning mountain and fynbos vistas, totally unspoilt - you are unlikely to come across anybody else. There is a 1,5 hour walk to a beautiful waterfall and large, deep rock pool, or you can walk all the way to Heidelberg, and overnight in mountain huts. Apparently there is a magnificent indigenous forest just before Heidelberg.
