Food Hunt

Ipoh city is famous for its gourmet food, they're usually family-run businesses that perfected the recipe over a few generations, some are even going extinct without any family member to take over their business. I'd curated some of the must-eat places that are not tourist attractions but local favourites.
One of the favorite curry mee (noodle) in Ipoh Garden town, choice of serving can be soup or dry curry. They also serve great roast chicken rice with roast pork & BBQ Waze there: https://waze.to/lr/hw0zfhz9e7

Tai Kar Rock is Ipoh's household brand as I can still remember during my childhood time, my family will bring us to eat our breakfast there, it is always crowded and we have to stand next to the table to pressure the guest to eat faster :) I would say they serve the best "Liu Fun" in Ipoh beside "Tai Shi Kiok", their fried bean-curd is one of the best served with dried chilli hor fun. Everybody know Ipoh are famous for Chicken Beansprout dish and the first name came to their mind is "Loh Wong" which today became the tourist attraction place. But for Ipoh people, most of us don't go there to eat chicken beansprout, this outlet called "Cowen Street Chicken" is the outlet you must try if you want to taste what Ipoh people preferred. To tell you a little story, the owner of this restaurant had some health challenges previously and the shop was closed for a long period of time, many of us waited for sometime, when he finally returned to business, everybody started to flood that place in fear that they might not be able to taste such great food again. I ate this Tau Foo Fah since my school time, there used to be a last-stop of a bus station right beside the building. Everyday, I would pop-by to eat the Tau Foo Fah or drink the soya bean. Today, it still taste good, no wonder over the past few decade of my life, when I tasted other Tau Foo Fah, I always shake my head and complaint to my friend that it's no good enough, some told me how tasty this fellas Tau Foo Fah, that Tau Foo Fah, I still can't find a good replacement for this. I was not being fussy, I think once u tasted the best, a better one are hard to come by. Waze there: https://waze.to/lr/hw0zfhhrry http://www.vkeong.com/funny-mountain-tau-fu-fah-ipoh/

This is not a restaurant.... I must say that this is the MUST-HAVE take away of Ipoh. After all your food exploration, sight-seeing exploration and you're ready to pack and go back home... Please remember to drive through (yes, drive through) this shop and wave your figure (not the middle one) to show how many you want... the guy standing at the shop will quickly rush over to your car to deliver your delicious salted chicken. Next you realised, it also aromatised your whole car with salted chicken smell. It is currently price at RM19/box (whole chicken), I still remember it was used to be RM14/box, look how inflation affect us but what the heck... it is still a damn good chicken to have. Burps & Giggles is a new venture by the people behind Indulgence. The place was absolutely buzzing.. The tables were all packed, the grill busy churning out burgers and hungry unseated patrons in a queue, watching the other diners like hawks. The decor and the ambiance uses lots of rustic wood, kitschy vintage knick-knacks, distressed walls on one side, and a bright sunlit courtyard on the other side. Burps & Giggles is a place with lots of personality and a story to tell. Waze there: https://waze.to/lr/hw0zfhhf3d

Eating Dim Sum in Ipoh has more choices compared to a few decades ago where Foh San and Ming Court rules the scene but not in today's food scene where we see many nice Dim Sum outlets pop up within suburb areas. Parks & Nature

This place is like a hidden jam lost in the middle of the city. When we first visited the place, we were amazed to see such a beautiful lake and cave that we never knew they're just right behind the road that we always drove past. If you like to explore nature, this is quite economical where u just need to pay for the ferry to transport u to the opposite side of the lake where u explore nature. The place is not very well kept as the entrance fees are low but the nature sight of it is worth a visit. This is the famous spot of Ipoh, almost all tourist will somehow landed on this spot, it is actually just a narrow street or a lorong in Malay, famously known as Concubine street (Yi Lai Kai). There're many good local foods surrounded that place beside just the street alone. Don't put too much hope on it as it is a very short street. It became well known due to the famous film director Ang Lee shot the movie "Lust Caution" about 10 years ago. The movie title itself compliment the name of the street very well as the history of the street stayed by many concubine of tycoon during the fifties. It is a very nice place for photo shooting I must say as you can get that back-in-time feel. Waze there: https://waze.to/lr/hw0zfhhdz9

As heritage houses go in the heart of old town Ipoh, the Hakka Miners’ clubhouse Han Chin Pet Soo - is one of the more prominent ones and has been a source of curiosity amongst the locals who never got to enter it. Located along Jalan Bijeh Timah, the imposing three-storey building was originally called Han Chin Pat Sou; Han Chin was the name given to the building while Pat Sou is Hakka for villa. Back then, the clubhouse was open only to Hakka miners and the Hakka community so those who were not members were not allowed into its inner sanctum. The museum is more of a showcase of the buildings’ impressive architecture, its original antiques that have been there since 1893 and the goings-on inside behind the white painted doors with only some sections on tin mining. - See more at: http://www.themalaymailonline.com/travel/article/han-chin-pet-soo-a-glimpse-at-the-life-of-hakka-tin-miners-in-ipoh#sthash.88GJGFuG.dpuf Waze there: https://waze.to/lr/hw0zfhheqx

Sightseeing

From the architect. Sekeping Kong Heng, in the charming old town of Ipoh, is the latest addition to the Sekeping family of retreats. It is located in a 3 storey neo-classical building which also houses a famous coffee shop of the same name on the ground floor that serves great coffee and the best local dishes in town. All effort has been made to preserve as much of the character of the existing building as possible in contrast to the surrounding new architectural interventions. In addition, an extension has been added at the back, tucked away to reveal an inner courtyard with a dramatic stairway to take guests up to their rooms.
