I love this old amusement park. I remember coming here in the 70's when I was a kid, and it hasn't changed much. It's like a place out of time. It's definitely a seasonal thing, but I believe the roller rink is open year round.

I love this theater so much! It's a classic. It reminds me of the theaters I went to as a kid, but better because they have beer and wine. It has character, unlike some soulless mall theater, plus it's much cheaper and family owned. The one negative is that the sound system isn't the greatest so you'll want to sit in the middle or closer.

If you've come to Portland with a child, or if you're a child at heart, then you really should go to OMSI. I've been going here since I was a kid and I still love it. Lots of fun, interactive science exhibits. There's even an old submarine you can take a tour of.

This would be a bit of a walk, but if you've never been to a New Season's you should really check it out. New Season's started here in Portland and it's a special kind of store. It's a bit spendy but the deli food is better than most restaurants, and they have a huge selection of organic produce and humanely sourced fish and meat. It can get a bit crowded during peak times so my advice is to go early in the morning. There's also an amazing food cart pod a block further West down Tacoma.

Food Scene

If you only eat at one place in Sellwood-Moreland, you've got to make it this place. The first time I ate at one of their 3 locations was at least 20 years ago, and I was blown away by the quality of their food, and they've kept up the quality since. I really admire that consistency, it's so rare. My suggestions are the fish and chips, the salads, any of the burgers, and the mac and cheese with bacon. Oh, and I think the beer from their brewery is the hidden gem of Portland.

Who doesn't love pizza? Even when it's bad, it's kinda good. Well this pizza isn't bad by any stretch. It's a chain, but it's a local chain and they've held up as far as quality. Good selection of microbrews and cider. Definitely the best pizza place in the area.

I remember when I lived in NW Portland back in the early 90's, there was a Papa Haydn nearby and I couldn't afford to eat there. It's always seemed too fancy for me. It's become kind of a thing. I still haven't eaten at one since. I hear it's amazing. Please, if you do eat there will you tell me how it was? Maybe I'll break down my wall of prejudice against fancy places and actually try it. :)

Relish is considered one of the best restaurants in all of Portland. It's a bit pricey but the atmosphere is wonderful, especially if you sit on the patio on a warm evening. If you want to treat yourself in this neighborhood to a special dinner, then this is the spot.

This one isn't within walking distance but it's worth the trek. All they do is burgers (and beer!) and they do it really, really well. There can be a bit of a line, but that's a Portland thing in general. We do love to wait in line for top notch food :)

I'll be honest, we don't eat here all that often. It's kind of spendy in my opinion, but the food really is quite good. When I'm craving Mexican food though I usually go a block down to San Felipe Taqueria. Drinks and atmosphere are way better here though.

The food cart scene in Portland is pretty amazing, and one of the most amazing things is how some of them rise to the top as far as their popularity and they wind up opening up a regular restaurant. PDX Sliders is a good example of that. The sandwiches really are incredible. Another example is Pok Pok, which isn't within walking distance, but it's not far at all by bus and I really recommend trying it.

This is a bit of a drive, but if you're craving good Thai food this is the spot. There's like a million Thai restaurants in Portland and many of them are just 'ok'. A quaint little brunch spot that's very popular in the neighborhood as you'll see when you walk up and see a big line! The owners are funny and quirky. Ok so this place is really only viable if you've got a car. You can get to it obviously on public transportation but it would take quite a while, there's no direct bus from here. But I have to mention it because I think it's the best place in Portland for brunch, and that's saying a lot because brunch is like a religion here. They're famous for huge portions and absolutely amazing quality food. Best chicken fried steak I've ever had in my life and there's not a close 2nd. Incredibl bloody mary's, almost too spicy, but not quite. Be prepared to wait in line on the weekends though unless you go right when they open or during the week.

So the Portland City Grill is a bit overrated as far as the food and drinks in my opinion, at least for the price. But you can't put a price on these views! Here's the trick...go right when happy hour starts, or even 15 minutes early (usually starts at 4) and get a seat by one of the windows. Happy hour food is pretty reasonably priced and pretty good. Or just have a couple drinks and admire the view. :)

The oldest restaurant in Portland and pretty unique. They serve Thanksgiving food year round, so you can get roasted turkey or ham with mash potatoes and gravy and sometimes you just need that comfort food. But the best part is the old bar, it's really worth seeing. And their Spanish coffees are famous, and your server will put on an elaborate table side show when he or she makes you one, and they're STRONG. I'd recommend going during happy hour and getting some food and a Spanish coffee in the bar :)

This is a pretty special place. The guy who started it had traveled to Southeast Asia and spent quite a while learning how to cook the food from scratch. Then he came back to Portland and started one food cart, and this was back when food carts weren't such a big thing. Then the restaurant Pok Pok sort of grew organically around the food cart. Food is amazing, try the chicken wings! And they have all sorts of exotic and yummy drinks. Just be prepared to wait in line, it's popular.

Drinks & Nightlife

This is a great neighborhood bar and here is my criteria when I say that...they make good drinks, they have pool, they have surprisingly good food and they have good service. Do you like old school dive bars? If not then this probably isn't your scene, but if you do then you'll love the Yukon. It's quintessential old school Portland. The drinks are strong. I love The Muddy Rudder! I wish it was a bit closer, but it's worth the trek. Amazing cocktails, a huge beer and cider selection, and the food is really good, especially the pizza or calzones. This is such a unique bar. You walk in and you're thinking 'where's the bar??'. Well it's all underground! It's like a dungeon but with drinks and a pool table and pinball machines, so much more pleasant than an actual dungeon. Interesting place to people watch or go early if you want a mellow drink underground. Best thing is you're within a block or so of about 6 other bars and all of them are interesting in some way.

Portland's back yard! We have so many events here, from the Blues Festival, the Rose Festival, Beer festivals! Seems like there's always something going on, or if not it's fun to just s stroll along and admire the bridges and the river and the city skyline. Portland's back yard! We have so many events here, from the Blues Festival, the Rose Festival, Beer festivals! Seems like there's always something going on, or if not it's fun to just s stroll along and admire the bridges and the river and the city skyline. Best time to go is during Saturday Market, you can escape the crowds there and go for a walk.

Shopping

There are actually two large buildings right across the street from each other and they're packed with a wide range of antiques. I'm not really into antiques per se, but they do have some neat stuff here. It's definitely worth taking a stroll through.

Feeling like browsing some used books but aren't in the mood to make the trek to Powell's and deal with the crowds? Well here's a spot in walking distance that I recommend.

I'm going to say firstly, before you get your hopes up, that this market is only open on Wednesdays, which seems really bizarre to me. But if you're here on a Wednesday you should really walk over and check it out. It's not the biggest farmer's market around, but it's quite pleasant.

If you're in Portland on a Saturday or Sunday then you should really visit Saturday Market. It's been around forever and I think it's pretty special. There's always music, lots of food carts, and everything there has to be handmade, though there's another market across the Max tracks that is a separate thing and their stuff doesn't have to be handmade. Anyway, it's a great place to get a gift or a souvenir from Portland and a fun place to people watch.

You've probably heard of Powell's , but just in case you haven't, it's the greatest bookstore in the world. There's only a few things you really have to see on a trip to Portland and this might top the list.

If you choose to partake in Oregon's recreational cannabis, then this is the best spot in the area. Really nice, helpful people and a great selection.
