Just past the old stone outbuildings, where statues lurk among exotic plants, you'll find yourself on the lip of a great, hemispherical sinkhole in the limestone substrate. During the 18th century the Caribbean was the scene of numerous military conflicts, primarily between England and France who fought for supremacy. The building of garrisons, forts and naval dockyards throughout the region was a direct result.
Barbados became the headquarters of the Windward and Leeward command of the English forces, and St. Ann’s Garrison was rapidly expanded because of this. Entering the museum at Springvale is like taking a step back in time. You will be immersed in a world of yesteryear surrounded by antique furniture and old-time cooking and household utensils.
You can just imagine the washerwomen up to their elbows in soapy water using the local 'juking board' while the iron sits over the coals getting warmed up!
Contrast that with the luxury of a mahogany-laden living area complete with comfortable planters chairs. In fact, the number of pieces of mahogany in a house was a sign of the wealth of the homeowner!
