Food Scene

Our favorite worker owned, neo-hippy, kind-of-shabby joint, especially good for breakfast. Tends to be crowded and noisy on weekend mornings with locals and students. Worth it though. Most ingredients are organic and local sourced. Try the excellent blueberry pancakes (specify real maple syrup) or vegan breakfast dishes like “Lambert’s Platter.” How many places can you find a velvet painting of Bob Dylan hanging on the wall? Confusingly, sign says up front reads “Hippies use side door.”

-This is a higher end restaurant ($25-$40 entrees) with very nice but casual ambiance and great food. A favorite spot for dinner. Reservations recommended. Located in downtown Harrisonburg’s historically renovated City Exchange Produce Building. The dining room features fresh, hand selected, seasonal foods and deserts prepared by in-house chefs. There is also a large and very nice BAR to the left as you enter, and is worth a visit even if you don’t want to eat in the dining room. A small, casual, inexpensive place in a strip mall serving really great Mediterranean fare such as kebabs and sandwiches with house-baked pita bread. Great for lunch or dinner. Order the chicken or lamb kebab, their specialty, with all three sauces.

Top Pick: An excellent American café, especially good for weekend Brunch, but a good choice anytime. Great service and moderately priced. Sightseeing

If coming from I-66 out of D.C. or from I-64 From Richmond, consider picking up Skyline Drive. All along the drive you pass through Shenandoah National Park and look West across the bucolic Shenandoah Valley all the way to the Allegheny range - Those mountains you see in the distance across the Valley is where you are headed to Rawley Springs. You would exit Skyline Drive near Elton (ignore the icon on the map that is farther North) and take rt. 33 West to Rawley Springs. It's a lot slower than taking rt. 81 (speed limit 35mph) so you should leave yourself plenty of time to stop at the pullouts and take in the views.

For one of the most day-long scenic drives you will ever enjoy, take Rt. 33 west to Franklin West Virginia. Take rt.220 south. Take a right on rt. 642 towards Bluegrass Virginia. In the village of Bluegrass, turn left on rt. 640 and go through the amazingly lovely Bluegrass Valley. At Hightown, take rt. 250 East toward Monterey VA. Have lunch in Monterey at "High's" for some real local flavor. Take rt 220 north back to Franklin. and pick up rt 33 East back to Rawley Springs. Alternately, from Monterey you could continue on rt 250 East to Staunton, back up rt 11 North (checking our the Factory Antique Mall in Verona) toward Harrisonburg, have dinner, and back to Rawley Springs on rt 33 West.

You really should take the short drive (about 10 miles) up to the top of Shenandoah mountain, which is the border between Virginia and West Virginia. Just take a left from Rawley Springs Rd onto Rt 33 west and go straight to the top. The drive itself is really great through George Washington National Forest and up the winding mountain road to the top where, just over the state line, there is a parking lot on the left from which you can get spectacular views to the west. The High Knob Fire Tower trail begins from this parking lot, and the fire tower also offers incredible views. The hike is under three miles round trip. Go!
