Sightseeing

The first Salisbury Cathedral was completed at Old Sarum in 1092 under Osmund, the first Bishop of Salisbury. The Domesday Book is thought to have been presented to William the Conqueror at Old Sarum a few years earlier, in 1086. Disputes with the military and scarce water supplies led to an alternative location being sought and in 1220 a new site for the Cathedral was consecrated at New Sarum. In this section of the website you can trace the major events of this Cathedral's history since, from the first phase of building, through the adding of the spire, via medieval upheaval, Reformation and Restoration to the reorderings of the 18th and 19th centuries and the Major Repair of the late 20th century. There is also the chance to find out more about the Sarum Rite, a form of liturgy developed in Salisbury which influenced English worship from the Middle Ages to the Reformation.

Wilton House, home to the 18th Earl of Pembroke, provides a fascinating insight into British history. Built on the site of a 9th century nunnery but now set in 21 acres of landscaped parkland, with water and rose gardens beside the River Nadder and Palladian Bridge. The magnificent Inigo Jones Staterooms include the famous Double Cube Room - the finest surviving 17th century stateroom in England - which was designed to display the family portraits by Van Dyck. Avebury henge and stone circles are one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain. Built and much altered during the Neolithic period, roughly between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, the henge survives as a huge circular bank and ditch, encircling an area that includes part of Avebury village. Within the henge is the largest stone circle in Britain - originally of about 100 stones - which in turn encloses two smaller stone circles. Avebury is part of an extraordinary set of Neolithic and Bronze Age ceremonial sites that seemingly formed a vast sacred landscape. They include West Kennet Avenue, West Kennet Long Barrow, The Sanctuary, Windmill Hill, and the mysterious Silbury Hill. Many can be reached on foot from the village. The Alexander Keiller Museum also displays many notable finds from the Avebury monuments. Together with Stonehenge, Avebury and its surroundings are a World Heritage Site. Read more about Avebury's history. Avebury henge and stone circles are managed by The National Trust on behalf of English Heritage, and the two organisations share the cost of managing and maintaining the property. Read the World Heritage Site Management Plan to find out more about the management of the Stonehenge and Avebury World Heritage Site.
