Sightseeing

The first mention of the Castello di Toppo is found in documents dating back to the year 1188. It was probably a fort built in a strategic position for guarding the valley. Indeed, from the Castle you can enjoy the breathtaking view on the plain of Toppo, and if you are so lucky to reach the Castle in a very clear day, you can see the whole plain of Pordenone province, up to the sea. Mid 16th century written witnesses tell us that the Castle at this time had long since been abandoned and it was never used again. After the recent works of restoration and deforestation of the surrounding area, the Castle's well preserved ruins are now freely open to the public.

The first mention of the Castello di Solimbergo dates back to the 1196. It was progressively abandoned by its last owners from the 14th-15th centuries and now only ruins of the central tower, part of the external wall and one of the gates survive. Considering the size of the tower, it seems likely that the Castle had mainly a defense function and probably served as a look-out spot on the valley, together with the Castello di Toppo, which you can clearly see from here, looking north. In 2011 works of deforestation and consolidation have been made and now the Castle is freely open to the public.

Everything Else

The people of this small village were evacuated by the army in the mid 1960s, when the nearby military area of Monte Ciaurlec was one of the most used of the time in Italy for shooting training. Now, after decades that people left Praforte, the only residents are chickens, a few goats, some sheep, and a couple of donkeys, owned by one of the old villagers. In the hope that a restoration action can take place as soon as possible, for the moment it's truly charming to take a walk among the old abandoned houses, looking for rural architectural details. Reachable by car.

Parks & Nature

From Travesio you reach Casera Davass after roughly a two-and-a-half-hour trail. From Toppo it takes more or less two hours. The first part of both pathways goes through the woods and the remaining part is on mountain meadows. Its particular position, on the top of the first pre-Alps line, makes the Casera (mountain hut) the perfect place from where to behold the valley below and, in clear days, the entire plain up to the sea. The Casera is always open to the public and you can freely spend the night there. No water supply, bring your own food. Make sure that you replace the firewood you use, for those who come after you.

One of the most important flying areas of north-east Italy for paragliders and hang gliders. But also if you don't like to fly, this place deserves a visit anyway: a stunning panorama from the top of the first chain of pre-Alps down to the flatland (and if you're lucky and the day is terse, you'll see also the sea!).
