Arts & Culture

Shrine of Redipuglia is the largest and most majestic Italian shrine dedicated to the fallen of the Great War. Made on the slopes of Mount Sei Busi by architect Giovanni Greppi and the sculptor Giannino Castiglioni, it was inaugurated September 18, 1938 after ten years of work. This work, also known as the Shrine "of hundred thousand", contains the remains of 100,187 soldiers who fell in the surrounding areas, in part already initially buried sull'antistante Colle di Sant'Elia . Strongly backed by the fascist regime, the sanctuary wanted to celebrate the sacrifice of the fallen and to give a proper burial to those who had not found a place in the cemetery of Invitti. The structure consists of three levels and symbolizes the army coming down from heaven, the commander of his guide, to travel the Via Eroica. At the top, three crosses recall the image of Mount Golgotha and the crucifixion of Christ.
