Hoboken has many historical sites -- The movie On The Waterfront with Marlon Brando was shot in Hoboken, Frank Sinatra lived there and Bruce Springstein played music at Maxwell's. You can walk to the waterfront and take the light rail into Hoboken terminal.

If you want to stay local take River Road along the river on the Jersey side to Edgewater City Promenade Shops offers a few stores, restaurants and nearby movie theatre. What I enjoy is the walking path that is on the river.
