Breweries / Distilleries / Speakeasies

This is our favorite distillery in Denver. If you are a gin lover, they have multiple original gins, all better than the last (vodka, whiskey, and liquors too!). We like to start here for a cocktail then wander down Larimer Street to visit the Larimer breweries such as Odell's, Recess, and 10 Barrel Brewing. Depending on how long you've been drinking and how desperately hungry you are, either keep it classy at Barcelona for great Spanish tapas, or just make a stop at Shake Shack and get the job done quickly!

One of the most iconic and perfectly located breweries in Golden, about 10 minutes from the house. The beer is crisp and delightful, but so is the space and scenic views. If you're a hiker or biker, take a trek along the North Table trails that begin behind the brewery, and then end the hike/bike by sitting outside with a beer and some food from their ever revolving Food Truck scene. Watch the dogs play at the attached dog park. It's just a win-win-win.

This is a new favorite, located in bustling Edgewater next to Sloan's Lake. A great place to start or end your night, since it's surrounded by other great places to eat and drink. We recommend also hitting up Edgewater Public Market when you're there for one of Denver's newer Food Halls.

A personal favorite spot of your hosts -- we love the good folks at Over Yonder and their sweet sweet brews! The best ice cream in Denver, spotted by the large milk churn building. The only thing is be prepared to wait in a line, especially on the weekend. We like to go to Linger for happy hour and drinks and then pop down the street for some ice cream (Salted Peanut Butter Cup or Salted Oreo is where it's at!)

Now, we all know pizza opinions are polarizing, and us hosts are from the great pizza town of Chicago. Therefore, take our pizza recommendations with a grain of salt if you aren't thick crust people. That being said, we think Blue Pan, serving up Detroit style square pan pizza, is as good as it gets here. They do have New York style thin crust too for "those people," but their pan pizza is award winning! Blue Pan delivers as well, since their restaurant is small and sometimes it can be hard to get a table.

Hikes / Bikes / Climbs / Paddles

This home serves as an excellent base to start all of your Colorado adventures from. It's on the west side of the metro area, minutes from the foothills, mountains, and all of the fantastic activities that go with playing outside in the front range.
Hiking and mountain biking and 15 minutes away. Gorgeous views. There is also some climbing up on North Table (a few sport and a few trad routes). It's pretty chossy, but the climbing isn't as busy as places like Clear Creek Canyon or Boulder Canyon. Make sure to stop for a brew at New Terrain after! Classic place for us Front-Rangers.

Clear Creek is famous for numerous reason: it supplies Coors with all its water to brew beer, it has tons of well-established climbing areas with plenty of classic sport and trad routes (with super easy access right off the road), there is some really fantastic white water paddling to be had in spring and summer, there is a walking/running/cycling path that leads from downtown Golden, and there are several trail heads to stop at for additional hiking or biking. If you climb in CCC, there are a lot of guidebooks available at local outdoor shops and the routes are also very well described on Mountain Project.

Prepare for gorgeous views, stunning canyon walls, and great hikes. Not to mention, Eldo is THE spot for hard trad climbing in the Denver metro area. Many of the best climbers in the world frequent Eldo to train -- if you're into trad climbing there's a good chance you'll run into a climber you know about here. Heads up, it's a State Park so there will be parking fees, usually about $10 -- and the place fills up fast on weekends so get there early!

Park at the east trailhead (lower lot) if you want a serious challenge for a hike or MTB ride -- parking down here allows you the experience to gain Belcher Hill (3.5+ miles straight up with 1,700+ feet of elevation gain). If Belcher Hill doesn't sound like the challenge you want (don't worry -- it sucks -- but it is a rite-of-passage for fitness freaks), park at the west side of the park at the Raw Hide Loop Trail Head, which is the "top" of the park. Numerous trails branch off from the Raw Hide TR with awesome views of the Front Range and lots of good tree cover (which isn't super common in the area). Serious mountain bikers will want to do the Longhorn Trail -- it's rated a black diamond, but it's a bikes-only downhill and is one of the best downhill trails on the FR.

This is the closer trailhead to the house for access to Walker Ranch park. The Clear Creek trail is a paved path that starts up-canyon from downtown Golden and goes all the way east to the South Platte River (north of Denver). You can pop off the trail around Crown Hill Park to take some roads (with bike lanes) to Sloan's Lake which is an easy way to connect your ride to downtown Denver at Confluence Park. From Confluence Park you can ride paved paths south to access miles and miles of paved trail riding -- south and east along the Bear Creek trail to Morrison (Red Rocks area), or all the way south to Chatfield State Park (you can enter it for free on a bike), and you can loop it all up with the C-470 Trail. Essentially, Clear Creek trail is an excellent way to link up a long road cycle, if you're into that kind of thing. The best part is a majority of your long ride will be on paved paths with no vehicular traffic.

Want to bag a 14er without even having to get out of your car? Well, you're in luck, because Mount Evans features the highest paved road in the country that takes you all the way to the top of the mountain! Be sure to take plenty of water with you (and some snacks)!! Our house sits around 5,500 feet elevation while this bad boy tops out at over 14,000 feet. Hydration and nutrition are key to feeling normal and not getting a massive headache. Also, even in the summer, it gets cold at the top so bring appropriate clothing. Avoid afternoons in the spring/summer -- thunderstorms roll out with extreme regularity every day around noon and you DO NOT want to be caught in the high alpine in a thunderstorm. There are options for hiking paths, as well, if you want to challenge yourself. Cyclists can also take the road up from Idaho Springs -- which makes for a crazy world-tour level hill climb. Or, you can take the abridged version of the hill climb and start spinning at Echo Lake, which still gets you a 13 mile climb with ~2,500 feet of gain.

The famous and sometimes controversial Apex Trail! Famous, because it's awesome and very busy on the weekends. Controversial, because it was (and still kind of is) a hot button topic between hikers and bikers. See, the thing is, Apex down through Enchanted Forest is one of the best downhill MTB trails around. For this reason, on EVEN calendar days the park is BIKES ONLY. On ODD calendar days the park is HIKERS only. Keep that in mind, and have fun!

The Flat Irons! Boulder's iconic, triangular shaped mountains that shoot into the sky just west of the city. This is the trailhead to go to for accessing the hikes and climbs. Very popular and busy on the weekends. Great bouldering, fun climbing, and even some "mellow" free soloing are available here. If you come to climb, read the guide books and come prepared. Every year there are, unfortunately, deaths from tourists who come out seeking an adventure, but get in a little over their heads. Don't be a statistic and stick to the trails if you aren't an experienced climber.

The world famous amphitheater is a bucket list venue for anyone who loves seeing live music. It's such an awesome experience to see a show here, but what a lot of people don't know is that it is an open space and City of Denver Park too. There are a good amount of hiking trails and even some mountain biking opportunities in there as well. Don't climb on the rocks, though, or you'll end up with a hefty fine! Even on event days, the amphitheater itself is open to the public until about 2pm. This means you can park and stroll up to the amphitheater to experience the views and get some sweet photos or you can do a workout and run up and down the seats or the stairs (or do group yoga). It's a great spot to kill some time and check an iconic location off the list. Close by is downtown Morrison, which is a cute little historic district with some shops, restaurants, and bars.

If you're a dinosaur nerd or have some kiddos in tow, take a trip over to Dinosaur Ridge to see plenty of fossilized dino footprints. You can pay for guided tours or park at the bottom for a free walk up the hill to where a prehistoric riverbed was frozen in time, covered, and eventually pushed back up to reveal tons of dinosaur footprints. There's also a spot on the backside of the ridge where you can see the base of a brontosaurus footprint and not too far from that is a newly discovered claw print from a velociraptor (!!) -- which is apparently crazy rare in the paleontology world.

River North -- or RiNo (pronounced like the animal) -- as Front Rangers like to call it, is a walkable and fun arts district on the northeast side of the city. You'll notice that locals really love their abbreviations of neighborhood names here -- RiNo, LoDo, Cap Hill, Wash Park, etc. Don't know why we do it, but we do! RiNo is a great area to bar/brewery crawl up and down Larimer Street. Lots of great restaurants and food options in this hood as well.

Stroll the lakes and check out the super nice and expensive older homes in the area. Lots of people activity in this area and a chiller pace for city living.

Skiing and Snowboarding

This is a small selection of our favorite ski resorts -- there are a lot more to be found in Colorado and if you have questions about any of them just ask us! The resorts listed here are all within an hour and a half drive from the house (without traffic -- ski traffic on I-70 can get tricky in the winter, but it's all about timing).
This is the closest ski mountain to our house (~60 minutes) and it is on the Ikon pass. Parking fills up fast, as it is fairly limited as ski areas go. This is a smaller resort, overall, but still has plenty of lifts and challenging terrain -- fun for families!

A true locals ski area that is a bit of an unknown gem -- most folks fly right past Loveland on I-70 and head to Summit County for the bigger resorts. Don't sleep on Loveland though, there's tons of above tree line open bowls to pick from and a great overall variety of terrain. Good for beginners, good for salty old corn doggers and everyone in between.

One of the snowiest resorts in all of Colorado and a favorite of your hosts! Also on the Ikon pass, this resort is very large and has great family-friendly activities. Truly a place you can come as a first time beginner or as a seasoned sender. If you like more challenging terrain, park on the Mary Jane side of the resort. It's all connected, but Mary Jane is famous for its steep end seemingly endless bump runs, amazingly fun gladed tree runs, and access to the Vasquez Cirque with awesome double black/extreme terrain.

If I (Phil) had a home mountain, this is where it would be. A-Basin is my absolute favorite place to ski. A true independent resort through and through, the good folks who own and operate this place stick their tongues out at Vail resorts and allow Ikon pass holders to ski here every once in a while (I kid, the Ikon Pass gives you 5 free days of skiing at A-Basin). This is not the place to come if you're a first time skier or snowboarder -- the two or three green runs on the front side would be rated as blue runs at any other resort in the state (and some of the blue runs here would easily rank as black diamonds at other resorts). You come to A-Basin ready to get on the steeps. The Pallavicini chairlift happens to be the Center of the Universe and it takes you to some spectacular -- and challenging -- terrain right out of the parking lot. That's not something that's featured at most ski resorts in this state. The legendary East Wall usually doesn't get filled in enough to be skied until January or February, but features some of the highest and steepest skiing in Colorado. Sharks abound though, so be careful! If you head here, hit me up for some more tips! I love this mountain and know it like the back of my hand. I could wax poetic about this place for DAYS.

Just down the road from A-Basin sits Keystone, which is another large ski area that is great for families. Keystone doesn't have the same awesome extreme terrain as A-Basin or Winter Park, but it does make up for it in the amount of easily accessed terrain. The blue cruisers on the front side will let you carve at high speeds until your quads turn into solid bricks from cramping -- and then you'll still have half the run left to finish. There's a 3.5 mile long green run called Schoolmarm that is truly awesome for beginners learning the joys of sliding around on snow. The middle and back peaks feature more challenging terrain and there are also some open bowls that can be hiked to (read: powder stashes). The back peak (The Outback) has several excellent black diamond tree runs to keep you entertained for a while. We really enjoy Keystone, even if it is on the Epic Pass (i.e. owned by Vail).
