is the biggest olive cultivation area of the Cyclades, 16 km from Chora, or Naxos Town. Halki has a long history and was once the capital of Naxos as well as its main administrative and trade centre. The many Neoclassical houses and buildings testify about the past wealth and power of the village. Many well-preserved Venetian Towers and fine Byzantine churches can be found in the area such as the 9th century Church of Panagia which is one of Naxos oldest churches and houses some beautiful Byzantine and post-Byzantine frescoes. Parking up or arriving by bus on the main street you can make the short journey to St Georges church which is a great example of Byzantine design. On the path there you will notice the olive groves on either side, something the area is famous for. Going back into the main village notice the architecture and the handsome villas. Gratsia Pyrgos is well signposted and is an excellent example of a tower house. Built by an aristocratic family (notice the coat of arms) it was used as a lookout in the days of pirate raids. Unfortunately you can't enter the tower but it can be admired close up. The Vallindra Kitron distillery is in the heart of the village and can be entered for free. You are given a tour of the site where the famous Kitron of the area is made. It is interesting to see the workings up close and the tour gives plenty of interesting facts, not least that the liquid is actually made from Citron leaves. The tour ends, naturally, with some sampling of the product as well as Ouzo which is also made here.

A Combination Of Tropican Feelings And Passion!
Moutsouna Naxos: Moutsouna is a small fishing village on the eastern coastline, possessing two small beaches. At the small rocky jetty of Moutsouna, many traditional wooden fishing boats (kaikia) moor in summer and gift visitors picturesque scenery. The quay was used for transferring marble from the quarries of Koronos-Apiranthos. There, the marble was loaded in boats and transported to Athens or other islands. Today, the mechanism is intact; therefore, guests can admire the - now rusty - emery airlift tower, cranes, and rails. On the right of the quaint wharf lies a sandy beach to enjoy some relaxing moments. At the water's edge, a narrow sea path leads to the adjacent beach, which is practically the same cove. The enchanting bay boasts crystal clear shallow waters and fine golden sand. Three seaside taverns serve delicious dishes of Greek cuisine, with fish and seafood dishes usually featuring the day's catch. The wider region is dotted by beautiful secluded beaches with azure waters, such as Azalas, Psili Ammos, Klidos, and Ligaridia. These beaches are frequently affected by winds, which makes them perfect for windsurfing spots

FILOTI

Filoti is in a beautiful verdant valley near the mountain of Zas. The village is situated on quite a steep hill and the main street contains the main life in terms of cafe and restaurants. It is a traditional Cycladic village built amphitheatrically on the slopes of the mountain with whitewashed flat roofed houses and narrow flowered streets. Local people use this flat topped houses as balconies. Filoti has a superb little main paved square surrounded by picturesque cafes and taverns, shadowed by a huge and majestic plane tree. Churches are plenty and they are worth exploring if the doors are open.

The impressive Church of Panagia Filotitissa on Naxos, dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary, is located close to Barozzi tower. The church is estimated to have been built in 1710 on a plot of land gained by locals from the feudal lord Barozzi after a long struggle. It is a triple-aisled, pillared and domed basilica, with a superbly sculptured bell tower, old icons and a finely- crafted marble altar screen.

A CIRCULAR TRAIL STARTING IN FILOTI Route: Filoti-Agia Marina-Levgasa-Zas Summit-Zas Cave-Arion Fountain-Filoti (circular route) Starting at the eastern approach to Filoti, Naxos’s largest, animal farming village in the center of the island, the trail follows an uphill route from the chapel of Irini on a mountain slope with rich tree vegetation and vineyards. It soon reaches the nodal point of Agia Marina, at the foot of Zas, the highest mountain in the Cycladic group of islands and named after Zeus, the Father of the Gods. Further uphill is the Levgasa spring and the ancient inscription, carved in the rock, ΟΡΟΣ ΔΙΟΣ ΜΗΛΩΣΙΟΥ, meaning “Mount of Zeus, Protector of the Sheep.” Τhe mountain holds great ornithological interest and hosts rare, endemic flora species. The ascent to the summit (1,003m) offers unique views of the Aegean Sea and the other Cycladic islands. From the summit, the trail initially follows a northerly direction and then turns west, with a steep descent. On the approach to Zas Cave, it becomes rugged and indiscernible. The cave, where — according to mythology — Zeus grew up, is of particular historical and speleological interest. Archaeologists believe it was first inhabited in the Neolithic period. The descent from the cave shortly leads to the Katafygi spring and then, on a restored, stone-paved footpath, to the Arion fountain – set in an appropriately arranged, idyllic location – a perfect resting stop for trekkers under the cool shade of an age-old plane tree. The southbound trail to Filoti ends near a half-ruined windmill. The last stretch back to the village is on the asphalt Filoti-Kalantos road.

Strofili - Seafood & Wine Restaurant
Irini's Restaurant is located along the waterfront of Naxos Town, very close to the Port. The ambiance is quite good with the sense of basilic all over the area due to the dozens of big pots surrounding the place. Although the restaurant serves up a varied menu of the most classic Greek dishes depending on the availability of fresh ingredients, there are some specialty dishes at Irini's, like the meatballs, patzarosalata (beetroot salad) and gigantes (beans). Due to its Mediterranean-diet oriented menu, you will find many delicious vegetarians and vegan options. The wine list is limited but it includes a fine house wine, both red and white, that exceeds all expectations. It is an ideal tavern for families and although it is a tourist friendly eatery with menus written in different languages, the cooking remains very close to the authentic recipes.

Definitely the area to stay, eat and have fun from early till late!

A leisurely walk there or get there by bike. Awarded for its quality waters on both a Greek and international level, the beach of Agios Prokopios is truly magnificent. Right behind the beach and towards its northern end there lie the remains of a salt pan which was part of an industry many decades ago. The beach is well organized, with umbrellas and sun-beds almost everywhere except its northern section The village of Agios Prokopios itself has many restaurants, taverns and snack bars. Motorbikes and ATVs can also be rented there. There are currently no car rentals in the area, however, you may rent a car from Naxos Town and have it delivered to Agios Prokopios at no extra charge during working hours.
