Food scene

If you're wanting a nice meal and great atmosphere to celebrate a special occasion or just because, Locals is the place to go and 15 minutes away by foot. If you're a seafood lover, we highly recommend the Pacific Rim Bouillabaisse! Beautifully set right on the Courtenay River, you can walk off dinner along the scenic river walk trail. Constructed in 1938 as a residence, the “Old House”, as it is known to local residents, features locally-produced wood construction with masonry detailing. In May 2013 Locals moved into the newly remodeled Comox Valley Heritage building. Great care was given to preserve as much of the original building as possible and to blend the newer addition with the old as much as possible. The Old House is valued as an eclectic example of Arts and Crafts architecture in Courtenay during the city’s first post-war expansion.

Located on the other side of the river, Martine's Bistro is about 10 to 15 minutes away by car but so worth the trip. Hours are limited so we recommend making a reservation in advance to avoid disappointment. The food and service make it so worth it, though! Our personal favourite? The AAA Black Angus Tenderloin. Martine’s supports the Comox Valley’s local producers and suppliers, like Seiffert’s Farm Market and the resident fishermen based out of the Comox Marina who work hard to provide fresh Halibut for feature dishes.

You'll want to eat here. This is the best pizza in the valley. You'll thank us. Please keep in mind this is a very popular spot, if you plan to eat in the restaurant, plan for there to be a bit of a wait.

A great spot to stop for a snack and a pint after a walk along the Royston Wreck Seaside Trail. They have a great selection of rotating local beer taps.

It might be a franchise but the staff are so friendly and they have a great happy hour! This is our go-to for an after work cocktail in a casual environment. Patio is dog friendly.

Craft Beer

If you're a craft beer lover, you simply cannot come to Courtenay without stopping for a pint at Gladstones. This local craft brewery has made itself known as a stable in the Comox Valley with it's laid back atmosphere, great beer and dog friendly patio. Please feel free to use one of the growlers that we've left out to fill and enjoy during your stays!

Aviation themed after the Courtenay Airpark it is located beside, Ace Brewing offers an excellent selection of beer and some local wine (I recommend the Borealis) and is only a 1km away, about a 15-20 minute walk. One of our favourite weekend activities is to walk or run around the Airpark then enjoy a pint on Ace's pet friendly patio. Please feel free to use one of the growlers that we've left out to fill and enjoy during your stays!

Nothing tastes better after a mountain bike ride or hike than a pint from Cumberland Brewing. The Red Tape Pale Ale is our favourite! It's about a 10-15 minute drive to the Village of Cumberland so we recommend combining with another activity in the area such as mountain biking, swimming, paddling or kayaking in Comox Lake, a walk in the forest or disc golf. Note: the patio is not dog friendly and the brewery is closed on Mondays. Please feel free to use one of the growlers that we've left out to fill and enjoy during your stays!

We like their beer but do suggest you check their hours of operation before trekking out to Comox. We've gone a few times only to find out that they are closed. Parking also seems to be quite challenging so maybe this is a good place to cycle to?

Wide range of taps featuring their own brews as well as guest taps. Can be quite busy on the weekends so maybe not the best place to go if you're limited on time.

Wineries

We love a Sunday afternoon on the dog friendly 40 Knots Terrace with a glass of wine and a walk around the vineyard. Tastings can be arranged in advance.

Outdoor Activities

There are so many things to do from here that it's hard to list them all! The Comox Dam Recreation Area is a hub for many outdoor activities. There is an entire trail network for running, dog walking, hiking and biking, including the Bevan River Trail to the abandoned logging structures. There is access to Comox Lake from one side of the logging road and access to the Puntledge River from the other side, both great spots for swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding. Keep in mind that the Dam can cause water levels and currents to fluctuate. Conditions may not always be suitable for water activities. A short stretch of gravel road must be transited to access this area. While 4 wheel drive is not necessary, us caution because there can be potholes, people riding dirt bikes and other hazards.

Mount Washington has as much to offer during the summer as it does during ski and snowboard season. In addition to the bike park, we recommend checking out the ziplining and the Comox Strathcona trails to Buttle Lake, Cruikshank Canyon and much, much more!
