It bears the name of a hermit dedicated to silence and prayer but has an origin that evokes scenarios of war and devastation. Fort San Jachiddu is just one of about twenty buildings overlooking the Strait of Messina, designed to monitor and strike the enemy in one of the strategic places in the Mediterranean. Modern Scylla and Charybdis that would have given no respite to the opponent, is now a place that speaks a different language, an oasis of infinite peace and beauty.

It is a secular wood of the highest ecological, naturalistic, faunistic and environmental value and is one of the oldest woods in Sicily. Geomorphologically it boasts an exceptional environmental diversity, ranging from clayey sediments to limestone rocks. Various ridges and differences in height dot the forest of hills such as Pizzo Castelluzzo, Serra Castagna, Pizzo Daniele and Pizzo Galera. Malabotta is an ecosystem made up of centuries-old plants, including the “Patriarchs of the Wood” centuries-old oaks with trunks over two meters in diameter. In addition, the vegetation is also composed of Turkey oaks, beeches, chestnuts, holly, holm oaks and various other species. The undergrowth passes from humid environments, to the prairie literally covered in spring by the Wild Peony (Paeonia officinalis), to drier and more rocky environments, where hawthorn, wild rose, thorny sparzio and other shrub species grow.

Discovering natural places

The Alcantara Gorges, also called Larderia Gorges, are located in the Alcantara Valley in Sicily where the Peloritani mountain range ends between the municipalities of Castiglione di Sicilia and Motta Camastra. The peculiarity of the gorges is the structure of the walls, created by basaltic lava flows (poor in silicon but rich in iron, magnesium and calcium). The lava then cooled very quickly creating pentagonal and hexagonal prismatic shapes, which recall the molecular structure of the materials that constitute it.

Getting to the path leading to the waterfall is quite simple. From the Messina ring road, take the "San Filippo - stadium" exit, turn right after the ENI refueling and follow the signs for the "village" of Santa Lucia, then for San Filippo Inferiore and finally for San Filippo Superiore. Try to take the road that runs along the right bank of the river and not the left one, which seems to have been hit by a bombing. At the end of the village, continue along the road parallel to the river for a couple of kilometers. The road is a bit run down but can be traveled by car without too much difficulty until the start of the route. Before starting a private road (in the mosaic of the photos we have inserted an image of the exact point) it is necessary to leave the asphalted path and take the path that runs along the San Filippo stream, along whose course there are old water mills, active until the 1950s and now abandoned. Since the San Filippo Torrent is essentially a torrent, the flow of water, both in the riverbed and in the waterfall, can vary a lot during the year. In periods when the rivers are fuller, the waterfall gains in spectacularity, but the path to reach it becomes complicated, as it is necessary to ford the river several times. The waterfall is quite close, just over a kilometer away from the paved road, so if you want to stop here without exploring the rest of the valley, you don't need much breath, but the path still presents some difficulties. In fact, there is no aided path but a barely mentioned track, where you often have to jump over the water with a good jump. It is necessary to equip yourself with suitable shoes, perhaps a nice climbing stick to help you in the more complicated passages and - just in case - a dry change if some jumps are shorter than necessary. The most difficult point is the one that leads right to the base of the waterfall, but a charitable soul has planted a nice piton to which a rope is attached to help you climb. Under the waterfall there is a fairly large and comfortable space to rest and enjoy the show. Climbing and free climbing enthusiasts can have fun with some apparently not too demanding walls.

The San Rizzo Hills are pleasant hills that rise gently from the sea and dominate the city of Messina. They are part of the Peloritani mountain range and are located in their eastern portion. The reliefs are on average between 800 and 1000 meters high, up to 1130 meters at the summit of Dinnammare. From the lookout in front of the Sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna of the same name, you can enjoy a wonderful view that ranges from Capo Peloro to the province of Catania, but above all of Messina with its characteristic sickle-shaped port and the Strait. Looking out from the opposite side, however, you can see the Aeolian Islands, the sanctuary of Tindari, the promontory of Milazzo and towards the south the summit of Etna. Not far from the city center it is therefore possible to find yourself in an oasis of greenery and pure air where you can spend days immersed in the luxuriant nature, for a picnic or even just for a walk in the woods. There are several equipped areas where you can stop, one above all is that of Musolino on the road that leads to the Sanctuary of Dinnammare.

The small distance from the coast sometimes, due to the tide, vanishes, making it a peninsula. Also called the "pearl of the Mediterranean", the name was coined by the German baron, Wilhelm von Gloeden, who spread the artistic value of the island all over the world. Donated in 1806 by Ferdinand I of Bourbon to Pancrazio Ciprioti, mayor of Taormina, it was purchased in 1890 by Florence Trevelyan who enhanced it by building a small house and planting rare precious essences. He planted non-native species and rare shrubs there. The island was then inherited by the lawyer. Cesare Acrosso, grandson of Salvatore Cacciola, husband of Florence Trevelyan. In 1954 it was bought for 38,000 ₤ by the brothers Leone and Emilio Bosurgi, who built a village with 12 autonomous residences and a tiny swimming pool disguised among rocks and plantations, in order to cheer and host their entrepreneur and banker friends. The Bosurgi family owned Sanderson, a historic citrus processing company from Messina. The bankruptcy of this in 1982 paved the way for the sale by judicial auction of the family assets which guaranteed the company's debts with sureties. Among these assets there was also Isola Bella with its villa. A first auction was therefore set for October 17, 1984 with a base of five and a half billion lire and a minimum raise of one hundred million, but it went deserted. Meanwhile, the institutions moved to protect the islet. On 8 October 1984 the Sicilian Region, at the request of the Municipality of Taormina, the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage declared Isola Bella a monument of historical and artistic interest of particular value as an "isolated example of unicum as a naturalistic, historical value and cultural ”, subjecting it to protection restrictions. The decree regarded the island as a "natural monument". A new auction on March 6, 1985, despite the fact that the base had been lowered by 20%, saw no buyers show up. In 1990 the island was finally purchased by the Department of Cultural Heritage of the Sicilian Region. In 1998 a nature reserve was established, managed by the WWF, then by the Province of Messina and recently passed under the management of CUTGANA, the environmental protection center of the University of Catania. With the establishment in 2010 of the Archaeological Parks, the management, use, protection and enhancement of Isola Bella are currently the responsibility of the Archaeological Park of Naxos.

Walks and trails

Located about 1 km from the crossroads of the Four Roads (Portella Rizzo) and winds for about 1000 meters. The route, easy to follow and with a reduced elevation excursion, is suitable for everyone. It starts from Forte Puntal Ferraro and, crossing different forest environments, arrives at the road to Camaro, near the former “Principe di Piemonte” colony and the equipped area below the Madonnuzza church. The path was designed to bring the visitor, especially children, closer to the themes of the forest and its respect through knowledge. The illustrative signs, one for each letter of the alphabet, are representative of the animal or plant species present on site. Opposite the entrance to the Abc path is the fallow deer area, built by the Forestry Property, which houses a community of about 70 fallow deer and is located close to Fort Ferraro, one of the forts built in the Umbertine era. About 2,430 km long, it is included in the Saponara Forestry Property, it starts from Portella Croce Cumia, on the road to Dinnammare, just past the gate of the Ziriò nursery, from which it takes its name and crosses various forest environments. The arboreal mantle, which makes up the forest cover of the area, is characterized by the dominance of the maritime pine and the chestnut tree governed by coppice. There are, even if to a lesser extent, the stone pine, Aleppo pine, black pine, Douglas (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and Robinia, located in the impluvial network. The undergrowth is characterized by elderberry plants, brambles and ferns. The areas covered by Mediterranean scrub are represented by heather (Erica arborea), charcoal broom (Cytisus scoparius), Spanish broom (Spartium junceum) Cistus (Cistus salvifolius) and young specimens of Holm oak (Quercus ilex), Downy oak (Quercus pubescens) and Greater Ash (Fraxinus excelsior). Halfway through the path, the path overlooks the Tyrrhenian coast and the Peloritani chain, offering a panorama that goes from Monte Scuderi, passing from Etna, Rocca Novara, to the Gulf of Milazzo up to the Aeolian Islands. During the spring and autumn season it is possible to admire the extraordinary and uniform flowering of the cyclamen, which covers the surface of the soil like a pink mantle. The historical testimonies linked to the mountain are given by a building, now in ruins, used during the last world war as a powder keg and by tunnels used as shelters. In the middle of the woods there are pits where snow was accumulated and stored to be used as ice in the summer. In the place, for over 50 years, the Forestry Administration has managed the only forest nursery in the province of Messina, an important reservoir of plants used to reforest state-owned land. The path, whose path ends in a ring, offers visitors numerous observation points of the wooded landscape. Each observation point is marked by the presence of signs which, in addition to reporting the name of the species, the classification and the characteristics that allow its recognition, provide detailed descriptions and curiosities.
