Neighbourhoods

Margate Old Town is full of great little eateries, art galleries and vintage or second-hand stores. Walking around Old Town gives a sense of what the British seaside would have been like in the middle of last century, the laidback vibe with that unmistakable holiday feeling. The great architecture is the perfect backdrop to a beautiful beach, with stairs where everyone sits for sundowners to see the sun set over the ocean. The growing number of funky coffee shops and craft breweries definitely lends itself to the concept of, 'Shoreditch by the Sea'.

Cliftonville has a bit of a reputation as being a bit rough and ready but there is a lot of regeneration happening. A stroll down the Northdown Road will bear testament to this with a number of new bars, craft breweries, shops and fun places to eat.

Food scene

I don't believe it is possible to book Dory's in advance but they have always tried to accommodate us. The food is always fresh and locally sourced. Lots of small plates to share and a great view of the sea. I wouldn't say it is cheap but it is well worth the trip even if only to sample the local wine selection.

Forts is always bustling with a young hipster crowd and conveniently located at the end of our road, towards the sea. We regularly enjoy morning coffee and breakfast at Forts. Lovely food and drinks, decent menu with veggie options and great selection of wine and beer. It can get quite busy and it often looks like there is a queue but people are sometimes just waiting for takeaway coffees, so worth asking.

Just a short stroll down the hill from the apartment, with a very inviting beer garden. We have only been here for cocktails which were incredible but cannot comment on the food.

Owned by the same people as Dory’s, this is a must visit. Incredible fresh seafood at a reasonable price. It is small and intimate so pre-booking is advised. The only thing I could fault with our meal - I wish there was more of it - delicious!
