Nature & Hikes

Grouse Mountain is a popular summer hike amongst Vancouverites. Grouse Grind, a 1.8-mile (2.7-km) trail up the face of the mountain whose 2,800-foot (850-meter) elevation gain has earned it the cheeky nickname “Mother Nature’s Stairmaster.” If you want something a little less challenging, take the Skyride to the summit and check out some of the mountaintop hiking trails. For those in search of a more out-of-the-box excursion, peruse the mountain’s diverse adventure offerings, which include ziplines, heli tours, and paragliding.

Lynn Headwaters Regional Park has many trails that offer a variety in choosing shorter hikes to longer day hikes. Lynn Loop is a short trail that takes you up through the forest before looping back along the rushing water of Lynn Creek. Tip: Instead of paying $40 per person at Capilano Suspension Bridge, head to Lynn Valley to visit the free suspension bridge. Although shorter than Capilano bridge, the Lynn suspension bridge is a beautiful segway into trails and a waterfall in the area. Lynn Valley Loop is also accessible by public transportation through Downtown, Vancouver.

Offering jaw-dropping views over Deep Cove and the Indian Arm, Quarry Rock leads you through the dense forest, crossing the hidden bridges before dropping you off at a golden flat waterfront boulder. A big bonus for Quarry Rock Trail is that it’s accessible for all levels of hikers even though you need to conquer a few rocky sections along the way. Quarry Rock trail is part of the Baden Powell Trail. If you ever get worn out amid the trip, don’t forget to stop over at Honey’s Doughnuts and freshen up with some cinnamon buns before getting back on the road. On a nice summer day, I recommend renting kayaks or paddleboards to enjoy the beautiful views and waters of Deep Cove. Tip: Rent the kayaks in advance since Deep Cove sees many visitors in the summer, especially on weekends. Parking can be a nightmare during weekends so try to visit on a weekday instead.

Stanley Park is a lush peninsula of huge trees adjacent to Downtown Vancouver. If you are looking to get outside and enjoy some nature, this is the best place to visit in Vancouver. A paved seawall path encircles the green space and is a wonderful place to explore on foot or by bicycle. Inland, the park offers many things to do, and you can spend a full day exploring attractions like the totem poles at Brockton Point or the Vancouver Aquarium. Spectacular views are a standard throughout the park either back towards the city or out to the ocean. Come spring, the park's gardens and shrubs burst into a rainbow of beautiful colors, led by the cherry trees and closely followed by the rhododendrons. In the summer, an outdoor pool operates right at the edge of the ocean. This 80-meter pool is heated and is a popular spot for families because of its gently sloped entry.
