Butte and Beyond

Sightseeing

Butte earned its nickname, "The Richest Hill on Earth" due to vast amount of copper pulled from the dozens of mines dotting the Butte Hill. Many of the headframes or "Gallus" frames still stand as reminders of the City's mining legacy. These towering structures once lowered miners deep underground, where a network of over 10,000 miles of tunnels reach depths of a mile deep. Of the remaining mine yard, the Anselmo stands as the most intact, with its hoist house, carpenter shop, and Dry still intact. The mine yard can be entered with special permission from Butte-Silver Bow, and is clearly visible from the uptown walking trail.

No trip to Butte is complete without a stop at the World Museum of Mining. The collection of historic buildings and mining equipment is a great place to enjoy with the family, and to learn about Butte's mining heritage. The museum is just beyond the Montana Tech campus and within easy walking distance.

Reminiscent of bee hives these charcoal kilns are a legacy of the rich gold mining in the area. In the early days of mining, the lack of rail access made coal hard to come by. Charcoal made in the kilns fueled the smelting activities up the road in Glendale. Little else remains of the smelting town.

Head out old Hwy 2 to Thompson Park to enjoy some excellent hiking. The old Milwaukee Rail line which runs through the park has been converted to a walking and biking trail which includes two tunnels and crosses a large trestle bridge.

Food scene

Of the two breweries currently operating in Butte, Butte Brewing is in my opinion the best. This is due largely to the fact that they make a great pizza on top of some solid brews. Quarry Brewery is also worth a stop, and offers a cozy cellar vibe. Reminder: Montana breweries must close at 8pm so make a good early stop on the night.

As far as sandwich places go, it's hard to find better. North 46 stands out for its delicious and sizable sandwiches and soups. The Bridger is quite good, but you really can't go wrong.

The small town of Anaconda embodies a Norman Rockwell-esque vibe and is a perfect day trip from Butte. Named after the Anaconda Mining Company, the towns mining legacy is evident in the towering smoke stack which can be seen for miles around. At 585' it is the tallest masonry structure in the world, and once topped a massive copper smelting facility which fueled the towns growth. The stack isn't publicly accessible except during special viewing events. Smelter City Brewery, the Washoe Theater, and a collection of great boutiques and restaurants make Anaconda a must visit.
