Tasty and cheap takeout Trinidadian food! Try a roti (like a giant wrap sandwich with various fillings) or two doubles (like a chickpea sandwich on chewy chickpea dough) for lunch, and ask to get it "with everything" to add tamarind and pepper sauces for extra flavor.

Neighborhoods

Certain streets are the most beautiful, such as MacDonough, Macon and Decatur. And along Tompkins Ave there are many interesting cafes and shops. The neighborhood has been African American since the 1970s but that is changing, and there are many hip Black businesses that seem to be thriving there right now.

Use your credit card - no need to get a Metrocard
You can pay for the subway or bus by just tapping your card or smartphone on the little screen you'll see by the subway turnstile or as you enter the bus. Once you've paid for a subway ride you can have a free transfer to any bus (and vice versa) within 2 hours. You can also transfer from bus to bus, however you can't ride the same bus to your destination and then home again - they have to be two different bus lines. For a transfer, just tap the same card and the system will know not to charge you twice. If you are multiple people using the same card, no problem, just tap once for each person.
