The Heights is one of the most iconic districts in Houston, Texas – and that’s saying something. If you were to simply take a drive through the neighborhood, you’d feel as if you’d been transported back to a Houston as it once was, but with modern-day comforts, like traffic lights and WiFi.
Sitting a bit northwest of downtown, it’s a walkable little town – which is hard to find in Houston – with architecture you won’t see anywhere else in this city. Houses line the numbered streets, each one different from the one beside it, each one quaint in its own way. When identical townhomes and pre-planned communities have overtaken other parts of Houston, it’s refreshing to see that each house in The Heights has a personality of its own.
Annexed by the city of Houston in 1919, The Heights were established in the late 1800s as a streetcar neighborhood just north of downtown. It was a quiet neighborhood, designed for those who wanted to live near to, but not quite within, the bustle of downtown.
Furthermore, the higher inland elevation provided a nice reprieve from the issues that came along with occupying the sea-level, mosquito-ridden southern regions of the city. Houston was, after all, built on a swamp. The Heights sought to establish a neighborhood beyond these challenges.
The Heights has undergone a dramatic facelift in recent decades. At one point, its population was steadily decreasing with its residents opting for more modern digs around the city. However, after years of restoration and gentrification, The Heights has taken on new life while maintaining its 1900s charm and appeal. In fact, it’s known for its well-preserved collection of Victorian architecture.
Now, The Heights is characterized by its upscale boutiques, antiques shops, coffee joints, and independently-owned restaurants. Even more than any other part of Houston, The Heights is neatly laid out in perfect blocks, making it easy to navigate by foot or by car. A quick stroll can introduce you to a plethora of stops worth making.
