Cannon Rocks gets its name from the cannons at the end of Alice Road. Historians are not entirely sure which shipwreck these two cannons & anchor are from, mysterious shipwreck remains are regularly uncovered by shifting sands & tides along this coastline. From the cannons one can do the 7 km Cannon Trail in amongst the forest. It's not a difficult walk and the paths are gentle, but it returns along the beach which may be not as easy, the beach, its' rock pools and spacious shores are exceptional. The beautiful Cannon Rocks offers awesome kitesurfing opportunities, it has hosted kitesurfing competitions, attracting the worlds top kiteboarders. Rock and surf angling is superb here. There are two hikes that start at Cannon Rocks, the first is a 7km hike that begins at the western side of town and heads out to the beach. The second is a two day hike that needs to be booked through the Addo Elephant Park booking office.

Boesmansriviermond/ Bushman's River Mouth, boasts a slipway and a beach, where you will find parking. Both the river and the beach are good for swimming, and sailboarding is popular when the wind is up at high tide at the river mouth. Kenton on Sea is situated directly across the river from Bushmans River Mouth. Gallop through salt water and over never ending sand dunes. Visit the wreck of the Volo. Guided tour. Suitable for experienced as well as inexperienced riders. Paddle up one of the longest estuaries in Southern Africa at sunrise, through pristine tangle wood forest. Listen for the calls of Knysna Loerie, Fish Eagle or the rare Barred Owl. Overnighting facilities can be arranged. Catch the salty sea breeze at sundown while the Hadydahs return noisily to their nesting sites in the euphorbias along the river bank. If you're lucky you may even spot a Bushbuck or two browsing along the river bank. The Bushman's River Canoe Trail is an overnight trail 15 km upstream on the banks of the tidal river to a basic overnight hut. You will need all of your bedding and supplies but the wooden hut, deep within the trees of the banks of the river, is a complete getaway from it all. To book contact the Kenton Marina.

🧜My Little House By The Sea. Perfectly Layzy Beach Dayz🧜

My seaside village is a typical small coastal town, with few permanent residents, a couple of small shops & a filling station for basic needs. The vast beach and its lagoon are the stars of the show. The lagoon is warm and perfect for children and families to swim or paddle in. Kilometers of sandy beach ideal for beachcombing, sandboarding & more, is overseen by a much photographed, iconic wooden lifeguard hut. There's plenty of space here so that even peak season shouldn't get ridiculous. The often deserted main beach front & parking area is abuzz with activity during peak season. A popular beachfront kiosk, " Lekke Bekkie " with a quality take away or sit down menu, is my favourite pit stop after one of my beach adventures, its' also is a popular place for visitors & locals to socialize. Personal safety is ensured, the parking lot and beachfront is monitored by CCTV, and regularly patrolled by public and private security vehicles. It is one of the few towns remaining where you will still see children playing in the streets until till late after sunset. I often end perfectly lazy beach dayz safely lounging on my front porch, immersed in glorious sunsets, listening to a Fish Eagle's call, often marveling at the sight of riders & their horses passing by my house a few meters away while making their way to the beach. You can clearly hear the waves crashing on the nearby seashore during high tide, providing the perfect backdrop for a dream come true experience for this former 'big city girl' The swimming and fishing here, are considered excellent, families & individuals return year after year, fishermen describe how they have the best fishing spots to themselves for most of the year. Boknes is not only a premier rock and surf angling destination, there are plenty of hiking trails in the surrounding area, and abundant bird life. Between July and December each year, the coastline is frequented by Southern Right Whales and Humpback Whales. A gentle hike, 4km along the beach follows the footsteps of the early explorers & takes you to Kwaaihoek, where Bartholomew Diaz erected a stone cross in 1488. Whales, dolphins and mermaids are often sighted here from a viewing platform adjacent to where a replica of the original cross has been erected. Families with members of varying ages often hike to the cross to picnic, snorkel or swim in the tidal pools. A walk along the beach anywhere along this pristine shoreline reveals caves, hidden rock pools, chimneys and sheltered bays created by unusual rock formations. If you are a birder you’ll definitely want to pack your binoculars as guided birding tours are popular in the area thanks to the biodiversity of estuaries, forest, subtropical thicket, fynbos and grassland. There are 2 bird hides along the Boknes river, situated roughly 250 meters away from Mermaids Cottage & Studio 107. Exceptional beauty and a unique location combines all the right ingredients to create an unforgettable holiday. Boknes is surrounded by beautiful big 5 game reserves. Book yourself a day trip or be adventurous and explore our FREE! “Poor Mans Game Drive" where can see some of our local wildlife, safe spots along the way allows you to stop, stretch your legs or picnic whilst enjoying unspoilt nature. There are many cultural & family entertainment and shopping opportunities around with a wide selection of restaurants, pubs, art galleries, historical towns & landmarks, quaint shops & chain stores all located close by.

Port Alfred midway on the Sunshine Coast, has typically mild weather that translates into beach days, even in winter. Named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s second son, Prince Alfred, it’s been here almost 200 years. Once it gave up on the idea of functioning as a major seaport, thanks to the sandbank at the mouth of the Kowie River, its navigable river and great beaches began to function as a mini Riviera on the Sunshine Coast

The village of Bathurst is an absolute must-visit in terms of historical buildings and quaintness; you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into a little English village set on a hillside (CNN labelled it South Africa’s most eccentric town in 2014). The people who live here tend to congregate around the Pig & Whistle (the country’s oldest pub), whether it’s meeting up for a beer at lunch time, or bumping into one another outside the general dealer, the town has the sense of being well lived in.

Hogsback is a little piece of paradise situated high up on the Amathole Mountains of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The Alexandria dune field is considered to be the best example in South Africa of bare coastal dune field, often referred to as a dune sea. It offers a unique and extraordinary wilderness resource which only a few other landscapes in South Africa provide. It is the largest and least degraded coastal dune field in the southern hemisphere. The dune field imparts a unique experience of solitude, infinity and spatial freedom. The Alexandria dune field has a surface area of about 15 800ha, stretching over 80km in length, with a width of up to 5km in places. The dune system is extremely dynamic with sand being continually blown in, building up and traversing inland. Some 375 000 cubic tons of sand is deposited into the dune fields each year.

Heritage Site /Whale watching/gentle family beach hike To reach the Diaz Cross is a 3 km walk across the beach from Boknes lagoon, or a 6 km beach walk from Bushman's River mouth (provided the tide is out). In 1487 Bartholomew Dias was his return journey to the African coast. It was his destiny to blow off course and sail around the southernmost tip of Africa to land in Mossel Bay, opening a sea route between Europe and Asia. He then ventured further east turning back, historians believe, when he reached the mouth of the Great Fish River in the Eastern Cape. On the way back he was to place three stone crosses on the southern African coastline – the first of these at Kwaaihoek, on the 12 March 1488 (the other two are at Cape Point and Namibia). Today the cross is a provincial heritage site. But the cross you will see is not the original. That was held in place by only a few boulders and was ultimately buried under sand and broken by storms, so that it disappeared leaving no obvious trace of its existence. If it weren't for the work of a Professor Axelson, who spent two years exploring Lisbon archives and libraries in search of anything relating to the fifteenth century Portuguese explorers, the remains of this particular limestone cross would have remained in obscurity. After systematic searching revealed one a bit of the cross a metre beneath the surface of the sand, and another large chunk was found in a pool over the edge of the cliff where it must have fallen, the work that eventually unearthed the entire cross, albeit in bits, would never have happened. Its reconstruction is today at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg." A replica of the cross has been erected on the same exposed spot. The remains of the original cross erected by Bartolomeu Dias are located at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

Situated in Kenton-on Sea (6 km away) lies Middle Beach, an unspoilt beach with soft sand and lovely warm water. At low tide the rock pools at Middle Beach in Kenton is fantastic experience. You can find many sea creatures there and you can also swim in 6 feet deep pools. Also it is a great way for young children and even babies to enjoy the water while still being relatively safe. The water here is also slightly warmer than in the open ocean because it has a chance to be baked by the sun. The beach has a shop, hygenic restrooms and sufficient parking.

The Boknes River, is a blind river, which rarely opens to the sea. It is not a very wide or long river and is very salty. It plays a vital role in the life cycle of the Sand Prawn, which can be found in abundance in this estuary and blind river When the Boknes river opens and closes, many fish species get trapped in the Boknes river and these fish can survive in the system until it opens again, then they will move out of the river back in to the sea. There are not a lot of fish in this river from my studies and exploration done here. Besides the bird life, crustacean and marine life in and around the river, these are some of the fish species one can expect to find in the Boknes blind river:

This renowned Reserve is home to a wide range of different species of Flora and Fauna, with the stunning Kariega River Estuary meandering through it. What make Sibuya Game Reserve so tantalising is that it has more navigable river than any other game reserve in South Africa. As a result of this claim the 2000 hectare reserve regards itself as one of the best birding destinations in this part of the country with nearly 400 different bird species. Did you know? Sibuya Game Reserve incorporates the unique East Cape Valley Bushveld, Grasslands and Coastal Forests. But the river also provides a particularly scenic backdrop for all the other game Sibuya has to offer the visitor, including the Big Five. A diversity of wildlife, from elephants to otters, grace the East Cape valley bushveld, grasslands and coastal forests that are the main terrain of the game reserve. To make it even more attractive, Sibuya lies within easy access on the malaria-free Sunshine Coast with its reception in the little seaside village of Kenton-on-Sea, not even 130 kilometres from Port Elizabeth. Visitors head to the reserve for a combination of the African safari and bush lodge experience, during which they can stay in one of two secluded camps – the River Camp and Forest Camp both, despite their names, on the banks of the Kariega River. The camps are reached via boat transfer – a slow and gentle trip up the Kariega estuary. Kingfishers, fish eagles, otters and antelope are common sightings along the banks of the river. The reserve's vegetation is varied and includes open river plains, lower Albany thicket, patches of Cape fynbos and grassy plateaus on which visitors are sure to spot larger grazing animals. Antelope in the Sibuya reserve include the blue duiker, the eland, rare oribi and Bontebok, jackals are regularly sighted and even caracals and aardvark make the odd appearance.

Wharf Street Wharf Street is a little collection of 19th-century buildings, some of them restored others in need of a bit of attention. It’s a busy little slip road that functions as a pedestrian thoroughfare on the river wharf, upstream from the river mouth. The Wharf Street Brew Pub is here, its dining room a vast space of exposed stone and brick, wooden floors, huge photos and craft brew on tap. Next door is the Little Brewery with its own brewing and fermentation rooms and a bottling corner. Pop in for tasters of their pilsner and ale. The two lie in the only stone building in town and an historical landmark that functioned as a harbour master’s, a city hall, a goods store and a cinema. This was the original commercial street of Port Alfred back in the 1820s.

The aerial view of the Kowie River loop (one of very few river loops in the country) has become quite a showstopper – it’s something of a mini Blyde River Canyon – known as Horseshoe Bend. The loop almost closes at the neck of the bend, forming a U-shape where fresh water meets sea water, which is how it got its name. If you’re doing a cruise of the Kowie River you can get here by boat, but you’ll have to climb to see the aerial view. It’s probably just easier to follow the R67 through Bathurst and on for about 4 km to the reserve. The 174ha Waters Meeting Nature Reserve in the Eastern Cape lies between Bathhurst Port Alfred, and is named for the part of the Kowie River several kilometres upstream where freshwater meets saltwater from the Kowie River Mouth. There are three main hiking trails through the reserve, from 3 to 9km, through coastal thicket Animals you are likely to see include rock dassies, blue duiker, otters, Kudu, waterbuck and bushpig. There is also an abundance of birdlife, including fish eagles. There are also picnic spots with braai areas and toilets on the riverbank. A steep hike up from the river will take you to a viewpoint with a beautiful view of the ‘horseshoe bend’ in the Kowie River. Overnight accommodation is available in a forest hut as part of the Kowie River Canoe Trail which starts in Port Alfred 21km away. Getting there: The Reserve can only be accessed from the Kowie River, from Port Alfred.

Boesmans River (Afrikaans: Boesmansrivier) is a river in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. It originates north of Kirkwood and runs east past Alicedale, before it turns and twists south and east to Kenton on Sea, where it mouths into the Indian Ocean through a tidal estuary only 1.7 km to the SW of the mouth of the Kariega River. The Bushman’s River Canoe Trail is a self-guided 2 day 26km trail up the Bushmans River from Kenton-on-Sea and back to the Kenton Marina . The canoe trail is a leisurely but sufficiently testing 13km’s each way, but the prize at the end – basic wooden hut accommodation in the bush complete with a jetmaster braai, will pale in comparison to the journey upriver. The river borders the Kariega Game Reserve and previous paddlers have spotted lions and elephant on their journey in addition to plenty of birdlife and game. The overnight hut sleeps 11 people. All supplies and bedding must be brought, but there is an option to have your things transported to the overnight hut ahead of you. For more info and to book: The Kenton Marina (+27) 046-648-1223.

"Route 72 is a scenic road that winds through the heart of the Sunshine Coast, connecting the bustling cities of Port Elizabeth and East London. It incorporates a pristine stretch of shoreline between the Garden Route and the Wild Coast. . Whether you want to head east, north or west (or south if you’re up for an ocean cruise), there’s something for you and the whole family within an hour or two of the Bay; adventure, relaxation, wildlife, budget spots and luxurious escapes, you name it and the Eastern Cape has it. One place I highly recommend for a quick winter break is the Sunshine Coast, with its long stretches of sandy beaches, rivers and history, so why not wave the city adieu and venture onto Route 72 for a bit of seaside fun and sunshine? The distances between a lot of the seaside villages and towns on Route 72 – such as Cannon Rocks, Boknes, Kenton-on-Sea and Port Alfred – are short so you can either base yourself in one spot for the weekend or wake up with a different view every morning. Some are so close together, you can even walk from one to the other one (tide permitting). Route 72 will: Entice you with its many spectacular, unspoilt beaches and clean, navigable rivers. It is home to 5 of the 7 natural biomes and is a great place to view wildlife in a safe, malaria- free environment. Enchant you with the warmth of local hospitality. Its quaint seaside towns and art villages provide excellent accommodation options and a variety of culinary experiences. Excite your zest for life with all the activities it offers. Sandbar Floating Restaurant The tranquillity and beauty of the Bushman’s River Mouth is unspoilt by any fast-paced city vibe. In fact, this part of the town of Kenton-on-Sea, and the Eastern Cape Province at large, is particularly peaceful, known for its laid back atmosphere and friendly folk. The Sandbar Floating Restaurant and Pub is just that; a restaurant that is situated on a permanently moored boat, which bobs slowly and peacefully on the quiet waters of the lagoon. The look and feel of the Sandbar is rustic, homely and comfortable; while the views of the river and surrounding Eastern Cape bushveld are simply breath-taking. There is a huge array of bird species in the area, and many of these make their appearance around the restaurant to the delight of the diners. The Cape clawless otter often visits the boat, playing in the warm waters of the river and entertaining patrons. The menu is characterised by pub fare and South African favourites. Thanks to its being on the coast of the Indian Ocean, fresh seafood is readily available and makes for scrumptious options for discerning diners and little ones alike. Light meals and grills are on offer, as well as tempting desserts. The Sandbar Floating Restaurant and Pub is fully licensed and serves a range of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails. It is the ideal spot at which to have a cold drink after a long, hot day on the beach or to bring the family for a fun lunch on the water’s edge. Local diners visit it frequently, and ensure that visitors are welcomed back again and again during their time in the peaceful Eastern Cape. It is also wheelchair accessible and child-friendly. NEED TO KNOW WHERE River Bend, Bushman's River Mouth, Kenton-on-Sea, Eastern Cape WHEN Booking essential. Open for lunch and dinner from 11h00 until late. Open from Tuesday to Sunday. Open on Modays during the season. TELEPHONE +27 (0)46 648-2450

Described as "The is the real deal for an Eastern Cape bush pub and venue experience." The Goat Shed is a rustic and tranquil setting surrounded by old sneeze wood poles, Milkwood and Ngwenya trees. Its an open and outdoor setting covered by a steel and canvas roof. The terraced area is paved, with jackal fenced walkways and allows for ease of moving guests to interact and chat freely. The beautiful 50 m paved and lit walkway from the parking is amazing. The location is 2 km from the Kenton-on-Sea crossroad, located on the Woodlands Cottages & Camping property. Quality, thin based wood-fired pizzas, fresh artisan breads and delicious waffles. Lovely setting, toes in the sand family dining venue. Beautifully rustic decor & the numerous strings of fairy lights makes this place a magical setting at night. *Not licenced to sell alcohol but you are welcome to bring your own If Mteto Maphoyi, initially employed as a waiter, has not in the meantime moved on to become an international star, he will delight you with his singing. He has exceptional vocal cords & has become the talk of the town, following his surprise rendition of Andrea Bocelli's Con Te Partiro (Time To Say Goodbye) The 33-year-old Mteto Maphoyi stole the hearts of Pizzarella customers when he turned on his speaker and started singing the Andrea Bocelli song for the crowd. According to Maphoyi, his singing gig began on 22 December 2020 when an Italian customer visited their restaurant. "While welcoming the customers, I realised that this one guy spoke Italian. I told him that I could not speak his language however, I can sing in Italian," giggled Maphoyi. +27827720614 3 Eastbourne Road, Kenton on Sea

Shopping

Rosehill Mall brings excellent shopping to the coastal town of Port Alfred, where sunshine and waves set the tone for each day. This mall offers shoppers and visitors the convenience of well-known outlets coupled with unique little finds and quirky hideaways. The beautiful interior design is complemented by fully-grown palm trees that flank the avenue on which all of the shops are perched. Everything has a distinct ‘beach’ look and feel without compromising on tasteful elegance. A number of retailers have been carefully chosen so that the shoppers have the widest range of shops and labels from which to choose. These include Edgars, Foschini, Woolworths, Truworths, Milady’s, Markhams, Ocean and Earth, Out of the Blue, Kawayan, Hendri Frakenfeld, Goshawk, Inked, Lavender Tree Trading, American Swiss, Charisma, Clicks and SuperSPAR. There are eateries galore, as well as beauty salons, real estate agents, and a gym. There is even a cinema, so that families can get their fair share of entertainment during their time in Port Alfred. Interestingly, the Rosehill Mall has earned the coveted status of being one of the top ‘green’ (or eco-friendly) projects of its kind in the country. The materials and methods used in building and maintaining the mall are of utmost importance, creating a centre in which the beauty of South Africa is enjoyed and protected. The mall boasts 1 000 parking bays, clean ablutions and in-house security. It is open every day, including public holidays."

Contact Number: 0466530207 ★The Royal Port Alfred Golf Club, one of four golf clubs in South Africa which have been granted the right to use the “Royal” prefix. Established in 1907, the undulating course snakes its way through thickets of pristine coastal forest and over hilly dunes always with the smell and sounds of the Indian Ocean close by & panoramic views from many of the fairways. The resident wild life such as bushbuck will continue grazing contently as you walk by while springbok and impala pronk with delight. The blesbok, fallow deer duiker and giant tortoise peer at the golfers with suspicion and there is bird life in abundance. Visitors welcome. Royal Connections: During a visit to Port Alfred in 1921 by Her Royal Highness Princess Alice of Connaught, the wife of the Governor General and Queen Victoria’s grand daughter, she bestowed names on the holes of the course. 12 of these remain. She was so impressed by her visit that she returned to the club on 6 April 1923 with her husband, Prince Arthur . Arising from this visit the “Royal” status was bestowed on the club by King George on 6 February 1925 In May 1925 another royal visitor in the person of the Prince of Wales (later Edward V111) spent a week relaxing in Port Alfred, & played several games. He later presented the Prince of Wales Cup to the club through his Equerry PW Leigh to be played for in a challenge. Assegaai Trails which is the place to be for hiking fans where you’ll get a real outdoor experience. The Camps There are two camps where you can spend the night, Bottom’s up and Rock Bottom. Both camps offer sleeping facilities for 14+ people with an outdoor feeling. Although you will have a roof over your head, it’s semi open air. In both camps you have clean drinking water and showers and in the first camp even a fridge, water cooker and electricity to charge your camera and electrical equipment. Both camps have everything you need to make a fire and traditional South African braai, a great opportunity to show off your campfire making skills to your friends. Rock Bottom The Trails As you can see on this map there are 4 hiking trails. The 7.5 km red and purple trails, the 6.5km yellow trail and the 5km blue trail starting and ending at the Rock Bottom camp and offers the best physical hiking experience. The trails are navigable by paint marks left on trees and rocks which makes the route easy to follow, while still having the feeling you’re getting deep into the solitude of nature. A guide on four legs One of the great surprises Assegaai Trails offers arrives on four legs at night. On our first day after a short hike doing a part of the yellow trail and coming back via the red trail to Bottom’s Up camp we made a big camp fire. Suddenly a dog emerged out of the dark and into the light of the campfire. This dog loves hiking and he’d rather do it with you than alone. We fed the dog some of our boerewors and after that he stayed with us till our last day at Assegaai. Booking: Sheila 082 445 1042 WHERE Start at the parking area under trees at the office, off the R343 between Grahamstown and Kenton-on-Sea and then finish at either of two camp sites WHEN Booking is required. ADDO’S WOODY CAPE, ROUTE 72 Route 72 on the Sunshine Coast is best-known for beach houses, speedboats and glorious beaches. A turn in at Alexandria will lead you to the spectacular Woody Cape section of the Addo National Park. The Addo dune field (or dune sea) is the largest and least degraded coastal dune field in the Southern Hemisphere, imparting a rare sense of infinity and natural solitude with views overlooking Algoa Bay and Bird Island. This is a pristine section of the province and you’ll feel like you’re discovering a true hidden gem! Hiking Trails Start: Woody Cape, Alexandria State Forest Finish: mouth of the Great Fish River Duration: 80 km, 5 days Fitness: moderate to difficult Our tip: highlights include wild and deserted beaches, the largest shifting dune fields in the southern hemisphere, shipwrecks, and the Diaz Cross This slackpacker, fully catered for, trail is a must for those who want the gruel and grind of a real beach hike, but still want to sleep in luxury at night. The entire trail wends its way along the beaches of the Wild Coast, via Cannon Rocks, the Diaz Cross, Kenton-on-Sea and on to the Great Fish River mouth. DAY ONE: WOODY CAPE TO CANNON ROCKS The initial leg of the trail takes you passed many shipwrecks, through the huge shifting dune field to the Springs, a natural artesian flow of water right on the beach, where you will break for lunch. Your destination is Cannon Rocks. DAY TWO: CANNON ROCKS TO BUSHMAN'S RIVER MOUTH The day starts with a walk to Boknes, and a swim in the sheltered lagoon, followed by two hours' on the beach to Diaz Cross - placed where Bartholomew Diaz, the Portuguese explorer who discovered the Cape of Good Hope way back in 1488, erected a Padroa. The next part of the hike from here to Bushman's River, Africa's longest tidal river, is littered with wrecks and beautiful bays. The evening includes a sundowner cruise. DAY THREE: BUSHMAN'S RIVER TO KOWIE RIVER Kenton-on-sea lies between the Bushman's and Kariega rivers; the scenery is beautiful. Cross the Kariega by boat and head up to the Kasouga River mouth. From here pass the famous wreck of Cape St Blaze before lunching at Ship rock. The day is fairly taxing but includes Rihkhals Rocks, Kowie point, Bretton Beach, and Kelly's Beach highlights. The evening includes another sundowner cruise along the Kowie River, past the fishing village of Port Alfred and through unspoilt Euphorbia forest. DAY FOUR: PORT ALFRED TO KLEINEMONDE Head to the Riet River via Fountain Rocks, Oyster Rock and the Rufanes River, enjoying a swim and the time to pick mussels at Three Sisters for your evening meal (depending on the tide). Lunch at the second sister overlooking Sharks Gully and the blowhole. The evening at Kleinemonde includes a sundowner cruise up the river. DAY FIVE: KLEINEMONDE TO FISH RIVER MOUTH Breakfast in the Great Fish Point Lighthouse, passing Clayton Rocks en route. This, the last day, has some of the best scenery.
