Estepona's old town is one of the few remaining old towns along with Marbella and Malaga. At the heart of the old town in Estepona is the Plaza de la Flores. From there the Plaza del Reloj is just around the corner and is home to the oldest Christian building on the Costa del Sol, Torre del Reloj, originally part of a church built on the site of an Arab mosque. Further up is the Plaza San Francisco which has a beautiful 18th century church. There is a lot to cover in the old town and will take the best part of a day to get around. Plaza de la Flores is where the tourist information centre is located so you can pick up your free map of the Old Town so is good place to start your tour. Down cobblestone streets decorated with geraniums you can see the Castillo de San Luis, a fortress constructed by Spain’s Catholic Monarchs at the end of the 15th century. This endearing little square has a belltower that is the last remaining part of the original Iglesia de los Remedios, destroyed in an earthquake in the mid-18th century.

The pine-scented peaks of the Sierra Bermeja range, rise behind Estepona and stretch as far as Casares to the west and the Genalguacil valley to the north. Take a day trip to see one of the most spectacular views across the Costa del Sol. On a clear day, especially in the winter months, when the wind has been coming from the west, you will have breath-taking views across to Morocco in the South and Gibraltar to the West. Drive up to the top, park your car and then do one of the many hikes in the area. Sometimes during winter, you may be fortunate to see the top of the mountain covered in snow. Unfortunately, in 2021 large areas of the Sierra Bermeja were devastated by wild fires.

Just around the Punta de Doncella headland from Estepona’s marina, is Playa del Cristo which is one of the most popular beaches of Estepona. There’s a breakwater on the east side and together with the natural curve of the bay and the beach’s east-facing orientation, the beach is protected from strong breezes and sea currents. It is a perfect place to learn to SUP, have lunch at the local Chiringuito or relax in the sun. SUP boards are available for rental by your hosts so please do not hesitate to ask.

The walk of almost 3 km runs from La Rada Beach to the Fishing Port with a part of it soon to be pedestrian only. This jewel of Estepona, exercises the body and recharges the spirit and has also become the meeting point throughout the year where you can enjoy extraordinary sunrises, especially in winter. During the hot days of summer, take a stroll before sunset and enjoy the atmosphere. There is no better place to be.

The urbanism of Estepona during the XIX century is marked by the expansion of the town towards the east. This extension of the town is equipped with a large square, in which the most important houses in Estepona of that time were built. During its history its name has changed, from its original Plaza Nueva, or Plaza de la Cárcel, to Plaza de la Constitución, Plaza del Rey, (in recognition of Fernando VII), owned by José Antonio (Falangist politician), up to the current place name of Plaza de las Flores. Today it is a large pedestrian square, the centre of life in Estepona, with several public buildings (Casa de las Tejerinas, Tourist Office), imposing 19th century houses, a large central fountain and, above all, a garden full of flowers where the current name comes from.
