The oldest grocery store in North America is located at 685 Rue Saint-Jean (a few minutes from the house). Stepping inside J.A. Moisan, you're greeted by old world charm - a dark, wood-filled room crammed with foodstuffs. I feel like I’ve been transported back to the 1870s. It has a good selection of fine food, products made in Québec and around the world.

Located in the famous Chateau Frontenac at 1 Rue des Carrières, bar 1608 is the most beautiful bar in town. Drinks are a little more expensive but it is worth the experience. It is often crowded, especially in high season. I suggest you go shortly after it opens to get a seat next to a window overlooking the St Laurence River. It opens at 4 pm weekdays and 2 pm weekends. You can also take a guided tour of the chateau Frontenac. Just Google "Guided Tour Chateau Frontenac". At the time of writing "Cicerone Tours" charged around $21 per adult.

Sapristi is our favorite bistro bar nearby. Located at 1001 rue St-Jean (7 min walk from the house). It is lively, family friendly with good pizza and pasta at a reasonable price. It has a beautiful patio in the back as shown on one of the photos attached. Being a bistro you can go there in the afternoon, sit in the beautiful courtyard and enjoy a beer or a glass of wine. Tasty Lebanese pita sandwiches for a reasonable (8.95 to 12.95 in 2022). Located at 1061 Rue Saint-Jean (old town), it is our favorite takeout place. The pita is toasted in a large oven which makes it crispy. Only a few places to sit inside so mostly for takeout but when the weather is warm (May to Sep) they have tables outside and you can eat there while people watching. That section of rue St-Jean is pedestrian only during the warmer season.

The Cochon Dingue (crazy pig) located at 1014 Rue Saint-Jean (8 minute walk from the house) is a local favorite. They have a menu for kids and the food is good. The "table d'hôte" is the best value. For $32.95 (2022) you get a 3 course meal plus coffee or tea. The salad as an appetizer is excellent (and quite filling). My favorite main dish is the turbot fish served with pasta and the crème brulée for desert (served cold but still pretty good). They don't take reservations but the restaurant is big so you don't usually have to wait too long to be seated and the service is reasonably fast.

Neighbourhoods worth Exploring

The house is in the Saint-Jean Baptiste district, about 4 blocks from Old Québec. Rue Saint-Jean, the main shopping street, runs through the entire neighbourhood. Over barely 1 km, you can find everything you need to please everyone, and then some! Every weekend from mid-May to the end of summer, a portion of rue Saint-Jean converts into a pedestrian-only street.
