Food scene

An absolute favorite and hub of the local area (We go there multiple times a week), this cafe and grocery is owned and run by Brooklyn transplants Jenny and Craig. They have a passion for reviving local history and roots, especially around the culture of heirloom apples and ciders: thus the name Golden Russet. They have a great breakfast and lunch selection, including grilled banana bread, a stellar fried chicken sandwich, and rotating seasonal salads and specials. Vegetarian options also available. Can't recommend highly enough.

If you love tea, this is the place to visit! With the largest selection of loose teas anywhere I have ever seen, the staff is helpful and knowledgeable, and will brew you a cup of a tea of your choice to sample! They have a cafe with fantastic scones and clotted cream, as well as lunch options. There is also a very nice gift shop.

Harker House is owned and run by Hal Newell, who after working with some of the best wine people in the city for years, has brought his excellent taste upstate, where he carefully curates the selection at this accessible yet classy shop. Many of their wines are natural or organic, and all of the liquors he stocks, with the exception of the newly-added tequila and mezcal section, are produced locally.

The best falafel I have ever had. It also happens to be vegan! Try the sabeech in a pita: a falafel sandwich with the addition of roasted eggplant and potatoes. It’s amazing.

Jeannie and Dave Bean have been members of the local community for as long as I can remember, with Dave doing his tap dance routines around our table growing up. Between his tales of being in the cast of the original West Side Story, and Jeannie's British treats, this greasy spoon cafe and diner with an English twist is a local staple. They have soups, sandwiches and pastries, and a full deli case, and are open for breakfast and lunch.

Some great vintage/antique shops (Bulls Head Treasures), a local farm market (Big Rock Farm), and amazing hiking trails in the Buttercup Farm Sanctuary and up Stissing Mountain, where there is a fire tower with a stunning view. Stanfordville is one of the sleeper hits of Dutchess County!

The historic building housing Harker House Wines and Spirits was gut renovated and restored as a family project by Hal, of the wine shop, and his In-Laws. His mother-in-law, Carol, runs the charming KC mercantile shop next door, with vintage and antique wares as well as local artisanal finds.

Antiquing

Tim and Tim scour the corners of the county relentlessly to bring back the treasures that await you in their shop. Last I was there Tim Jr. enthusiastically emphasized that there are new items every week, and it’s worth a visit just to see the incredible cross section of local history stocked on their shelves. If you like vintage and antiques, this is a very fun place to spend a Saturday morning getting lost.

Farmers’ Markets all Weekend

If you miss Saturday’s (smaller but very good) farmers’ market in Millbrook, there is an exceptional one in Rhinebeck on Sunday!
