Torre Salsa is an oasis protected by the WWF with isolated and wild beaches. An uncontaminated stretch of coast extends between Siculiana Marina and Ericlea Minoa within the Nature Oriented Reserve of Torre Salsa, where chalky white cliffs of gypsum alternate with limestone marls which are, now and then, covered with layers of clay. The territory of the Reserve of Torre Salsa extends over 761.62 hectares. Only at times does the grassy and shrubby vegetation that covers this wild environment make it practicable to access the splendid beach though narrow and rocky trails. Including 6 km of beach, this territory connects the sea to the mainland. The sea is crystal clear and its seabed teems with wildlife. The ancient watchtower of Torre Salsa is situated in the very heart of this oasis and dominates the top of a small promontory where the process of erosion is more intense, and from which the white limestone marl gleams. In the shallow sea, an uneven rocky slab shapes countless paths where tiny fishes dart swiftly between the seaweeds and slow shellfish finds shelter. Along this stunning stretch of Sicilian coast one can also admire steep cliffs, huge sand dunes and secluded beaches, which are favourite destinations for lovers of crystal clear waters.

Scala dei Turchi is a wonderful cliff located in one of the most spectacular and evocative corners overlooking the Strait of Sicily. It is a wall of calcareous marl which is blinding white in color, and composed of limestone and clay. It rises above sea level along the coast between Realmonte and Porto Empedocle, in the province of Agrigento. Created over the centuries through the continuous movement of water and wind, it slowly took the shape of an enormous staircase thus called the ‘Scala dei Turchi’ (Stair of Turks). According to ancient legends, the natural formation was once used by Turkish pirates who, during their invasions, would climb along the steps and loot nearby villages. This breathtaking beauty, was fairly untouched and visited only by a few local bathers until just a few years ago. It has now become a popular attraction thanks to its appearance in a famous TV series, films and commercials. Since then this enchanted place has attracted many onlookers and today the marly promontory is the destination of many tourists, who like to lie down along the very white natural beds to sunbathe and swim in the crystal-clear waters. It has also become known as the perfect selfie spot, and in 2018 it garnered over 108,200 hashtags on Instagram making it one of the most popular summer destinations for social users in that year.

The rediscovery of Akragas began towards the end of the eighteenth century, when the first European travellers reached Sicily, discovering an unexpected and immense artistic, archaeological heritage. In a almost enchanted valley, full of almond trees in bloom, it is the most impressive group of monuments of the Hellenic architecture in Sicily. The unique charm of this site is in this blend of cultural environment and natural landscape. The Valley of the Temples is certainly the most important testimony of the ancient, classical culture of Sicily. It brings together the temples of gods goddesses as well as the area of the necropolis and sanctuaries outside the walls. The temple of Castor and Pollux (Dioscuri),  the legendary twin brothers, born from the union of Jupiter and the queen of Sparta, nowadays has only four columns left and has  become the symbol of Agrigento. The temple of Olympian Zeus (Jupiter) was built to thank Zeus on the occasion of the Agrigentines’ victory over the Carthaginians, in 480 BC .  Here are the famous atlases, some gigantic statues with human shape, once used as columns o pilasters. The Temple of Concordia, also built around the 5th century, is located along the via Sacra and is one as well of the best preserved temples. In the sixth century it was transformed into a sacred building. The name Concordia comes from a Latin inscription found near the temple itself. In front of the Temple, you can admire the statue of Icarus, donated by the Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj. The statue represents the Fall of Icarus, who disobeyed his father Daedalus, he flew too close to the sun, burned his wings of wax and fell into the Mediterranean. The temple of Heracles (Hercules) is the oldest one.  Inside it kept a bronze statue of Hercules himself, which  the Akragantines loved very much.  The temple, destroyed by war and natural disasters, today has only eight columns left. The temple of Aesculapius was built far outside the ancient walls of the city, a place of pilgrimage for the sick who asked to be healed. The walls of the temple were covered by the words of the sick who obtained healing. The tomb of Theron, near the Golden Gate, is an imposing pyramidal monument made of tuff stone. It was built in memory of the fallen of the Second Punic War. The temple of Vulcano whose ruins suggests it once was an imposing building, dates back to the fifth century.  In its foundations, the remains of an archaic temple were found. The temple of Juno (Hera Lakinia) – Its name, like that of the nearby Temple of Concordia, is conventional as a result of a wrong interpretation of a Latin inscription that  aligns it with the temple of Hera, in Crotone. Placed spectacularly in the easternmost part of this  magical hillside, it housed the cult of the goddess of fertility. The traces of fire, amazingly still visible in the walls of the cell, remind us of 406 B.C. when this magnificent temple, almost identical to that of Concordia, was destroyed by the Carthaginians. Nearby, there is also a clearly visible big altar for sacrifices (in the East side) and a section of street deeply furrowed by carts coming from the city’s  “Gate III”.

In the Kolymbetra Garden you can breathe the scent of the Mediterranean maquis. About 2500 years ago, the tyrant Theron had a system of tunnels and hypogea designed to feed this small valley with water. The large swimming pool that emerged became a meeting place for the inhabitants of the city and cheer the rich Akragantini. A century later it was buried and gave rise to a very fertile garden comparable to Eden. This area, within the Valley of the Temples and not far from the temple of the Dioscuri, since 1999 has been entrusted to the FAI Fondo Ambiente Italiano. It is a precious example of Mediterranean maquis rich in citrus plants, pistachios, carob trees, nuts, mulberries, pomegranates that still grow thanks to the ancient water supply. Not infrequently this magical place becomes the setting of events, concerts and exhibitions.
