Zamek Lavardens

Impressive medieval Castle with rich history surrounded by the village of Lavardens. The first mention of a castle in Lavardens is attested in 1140 in the black cartulary of Sainte-Marie d'Auch cathedral. The first known castellan was Géraud de l'Isle Arbéchan, a vassal of the Count of Fezensac. By succession, the castle became the property of the Counts of Armagnac and a royal fortress under the sovereignty sometimes English, sometimes French. The fortress was stormed and fell into the hands of the troops of Charles VIII in 1496 who partially destroyed it. Thus, the count's castle remained in this state for one hundred and twenty-four years.

Fourcès

Classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, Fourcès, an atypical village in the Gers, will delight all your senses! An old picturesque castelnau, this village seduces from the start by its beauty and serenity. Embraced by the Auzoue, a pretty river full of fish, Fourcès opens up like a living history book. The round square occupies the site of the motte castrale where the primitive castle was built, destroyed in the 15th century. One can meet there in the shade of the plane trees to celebrate, play petanque, attend concerts, bargain hunting or even be intoxicated by the scents of the flower market (last weekend of April). Around the square, medieval houses with oak jambs stand side by side with more recent residences from the 17th and 18th centuries. The church, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, was built on the remains of an old church from the 13th century. It was built in Romanesque style with three naves around 1870 and was opened for worship in 1875. Gothic style with a single nave, it has beautiful stained glass windows recently redone identically. It is open every Sunday from January 1 to March 31 and from November 1 to December 31. The Clock Tower (13th century), the richly planted arboretums and the bucolic walkways add to the pleasure of staying in this Gascon village of 300 inhabitants, dynamic and proud of its heritage.

La Romieu

Petit village au nord du Gers, classé parmi les plus beaux villages de FranceAt the end of the 11th century AD, the German monk Albert, returning from a pilgrimage to Rome and going to Santiago de Compostela, settled in this region. On the land of the lords of Firmacon, Viscounts of Lomagne, he founded a priory attached to the abbey of Saint Victor of Marseille. This priory will be the base of the village, built in a safeguard. "Roumiou" means "pilgrim" in Gascon. In the XIVth century, the village became more important. Arnaud d’Aux, dignitary of the pontifical court in Avignon, fixed in his native country the family tomb, by making erect the collegiate complex Saint Pierre. The village of La Romieu, in the shape of an irregular pentagon, was equipped with crenellated walls, ditches and drawbridges, doors and towers. All this did not prevent the Protestant garrison of Mongommery from entering the village in 1569 and destroying a good part of the houses and archives by fire. The parish church, on the actual square, was destroyed after the French revolution. The northern door still remains with its primitive aspect. It is surmounted by a square tower with machicolation and loopholes. The central square and the arcades, which house the shops, have just been renovated. The wash house and the gothic fountain let the water of the small Auvignon flow, and invite you to calm and serenity. And today… In addition to being classified as a historical monument, the collegiate complex has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since December 2, 1998. La Romieu, a small village of 550 inhabitants keeps the dynamics with shops, school, animations, and associations. At the crossroads of the way of Saint Jacques de Compostelle coming from Puy en Velay and Rocamadour, in the middle of the valleys, La Romieu is happy that you are curious to discover this place and its famous legend of cats.

Fief of the counts of Armagnac, the Castle of Lavardens was rebuilt by the marshal Antoine de Roquelaure, faithful companion of Henri IV. Generously rewarded for his services, old husband in second marriage of a very young woman Suzanne de Bassabat, he undertook the works of this castle by love for her. To visit the castle, refer to the periods and opening hours. * Saint-Michel Church: the bell tower is classified as a Historic Monument. Only the chevet, the bell tower and the Notre-Dame chapel remain from the old construction. The bell tower (originally a medieval tower on three levels) was completed late with a construction (XVI-XVIIth centuries). This more recent construction can be clearly seen above the clock. Throughout the village, discover also the Enjourdan mills, the twin mills of Sainte-Marie, the Parat wash house, the Iron Cross, the Sainte-Marie Chapel... In July and August don't miss the traditional night markets of the village... Meet the local craftsmen and producers through the picturesque streets and taste their fresh products while enjoying the concert which is played under your eyes...
