Set in the heart of rural Essex, and enjoying stunning panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, RHS Garden Hyde Hall is one of the finest gardens in the east of England. This 360-acre site is a haven of peace and tranquillity, encompassing a diverse mix of garden styles from traditional to modern. Highlights include the Dry Garden with its fantastic range of drought resistant plants, and the Hilltop Garden with its roses and herbaceous borders. There’s also a Global Growth Vegetable Garden, which showcases vegetables from around the world and a Winter Garden that celebrates the delights of wintertime. There's also a cafe, restaurant, garden library, children's play area, gift shop and garden centre.

The Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation runs through a largely unspoilt part of rural Essex with a footpath along its full length. The waterway passes highlights such as the lock at Paper Mill and All Saints Church in Ulting, joining the sea at Heybridge.

Heybridge, rather than the sea port of Maldon, is the point where the waterway enters the sea as local landowners and other port interests objected to the construction of the Navigation. They feared it would bring a loss of trade so the community around Heybridge Basin grew following the waterway construction work in the 1790s. Previously the area had been entirely rural farmland. Please visit essexwalks.com for an extensive list of walks…🚶🏼‍♀️🚶🏻 From the rolling hills to the coastline, through unspoilt villages and ancient woodlands, all of rural Essex is best appreciated on foot. This website provides all the information needed for individuals or couples to enjoy quiet walks in the beautiful Essex countryside. All these walks are on public footpaths, permissive paths or other land open to the public, so you never have to worry about trespassing. Parking for these walks should never be an issue. The general rule that I use is park in a village next to a pub or church. Can then end the walk with a well earned pint in a historic chocolate box village.
