Buyuk Han (the Great Inn) is on the occupied part of Nicosia and is the largest caravansarai on the island of Cyprus and is considered to be one of the finest buildings on the island. It was built by the Ottomans in 1572, the year after they had seized Cyprus from the Venetians. In the centre of the open courtyard is a mosque with a fountain for pre-prayer ablutions. It became the first city prison under British administration. After spending most of the 1990s being restored, the inn has been revived as a thriving arts centre, consisting of several galleries and workshops. There are also several courtyard cafes and souvenir shops.

On the occupied side of Cyprus is one of the Mediterranean's most beautiful castle ruins, St. Hilarion's is an old Crusader bastion and the home of plenty of local legends and myths - the most famous being that a fairy queen, who spent her time charming local shepherds, built the castle here. The extensive ramparts and chambers snake up the mountain and are explorer heaven. For those that climb right to the top, the views across a fair chunk of the island are phenomenal. If you only have time to see one castle in Cyprus, make it this one.

Take the elevator to the top of the Shacolas Tower Museum and Observatory, found on Ledra Street (and sometimes called the Ledra Street Observatory). From here, you have a 360 degree view of the city. It also acts as a museum, so you can get a sense of Nicosia’s history and some of the recent political struggles it’s been through. Not only will you get some amazing shots of the city, you can also orient yourself accordingly, so I recommend heading here early to get a lay of the land.

A jaw-dropping example of religious iconography. It’s quite small, but the ornate gold work is absolutely stunning. Please note that you must wear clothing that covers your knees here, so choose trousers or a long skirt for the day.

Cyprus has a vibrant coffee culture, so no visit to Nicosia is complete without a stop in a traditional café. Head to Onasagorou Street and choose any of the places under the vines; they will all serve up the perfect Greek coffee, strong and thick. If the weather is nice, which is usually is, sit outside and spend a bit of time people-watching and/or indulging in a hookah. You’ll also find a lot of little souvenir shops around here, and there’s also good shopping along Ledra Street, a pedestrian street.

The most recognisable landmark in the occupied part of Nicosia, the Selimiye Mosque began life as the Church of Agia Sofia and was finished after a 78-year construction process in 1326. It has been a mosque since the 16th century, when the Ottomans took control of the island. This merging of elaborate medieval church design and the simplicity of mosque design has created a fascinating space with the soaring interior of this typically Gothic structure having been whitewashed and any icon details long taken away. If you'd like to enter, bring a headscarf (for females) and dress modestly (no shorts or shoulderless tops). The mosque is a five-minute walk from the Ledra Street border crossing.

Nicosia is built at the northern end of the Mesaorian Plain, the last geological feature to rise from the sea in the formation of Cyprus. It’s worth visiting at different times of year for the variety of vistas it offers. In springtime, it is green and carpeted with wild flowers, reminiscent of an alpine meadow then, months later it is transformed into a searingly hot dustpan. Years ago a visit to the plain would have seen camel trains crossing, what is effectively a desert in summer, taking fruit from the coastal regions and salt from Akrotiri and Larnaca.
