Food Scene

I like the atmosphere in the bar area. The menu is long and most food is brew pub and the beer is made on-site. There, you can meet locals, other guests, and both pro and amateur adventure travelers. For healthy food, try the Jiro salad or the veggie chili, which is so complex you won't miss the meat. At the other extreme, their Jack Daniels Burger and Onion Rings are tasty.

I love Italian and this one is quite good. Pasta Jay's other store is on the mall in Boulder, Colorado. Try the Chicken Genovese, Lasagna, or the Seafood Shells, wow!

First night's dinner! Located just up the road from the Villa is the Branding Iron Restaurant, cowboy steaks and hamburgers. Definitely not gourmet but a great choice for quick takeout and take back to the villa's patio for dinner. A menu is stored in the drawer of the living room TV console.

The food truck serves up some of the best veggie-quesadillas ever. Cheap and good. Tables and chairs are outdoors, under shade trees. This just might be the most popular restaurant in Moab. Great choice for lunch.

This is the only fine dining restaurant in Moab and it is surprisingly sophisticated, offering fresh fish, beef, bison chicken, pork dishes. Their regular menu is limited, but they always have specials, be sure to ask for them. The place is small so reservations are a must. $$$$

Another alternative for take-out (to take back to my sweet patio) is Milt's. There is a back road (East Mill Creek Road) to Milt's from my villa. A 50's style diner, where super friendly waiters will sling some of the best burgers, fries and onion rings at you ever. It is small and you will either sit outside on tables under the trees or at the counter where you can watch all the action.

Open only for breakfast, this is a nice sit down restaurant with indoor or outdoor seating. They have all your breakfast favorites. I like the Jailhouse chorizo scramble and the southwest benedict with spicy hollandaise sauce. If you like pancakes, try the pumpkin ginger pancakes. And their bacon is the best bacon ever.

Avoid!! No!! Don't do it!! I'm suppose to suggest where to go in this space, but I just have to mention where not to go as well. This spot looks like it might be a good fine dining spot, located high on a hill in a converted residence with great views. They don't know anything about fine dining and the service is awful. Don't be fooled, seriously, don't go there. $$$$

For Mexican food in Moab, pick Miguel's. Small, funky spot with attentive waiters and great food. I like their fish tacos, but you might also try there scallop and shrimp dishes. Also their beef fajitas are a good choice. Their guacamole and margaritas are also tasty.

Looking for tasty sandwiches to take on a picnic, or a quick lunch in town. Try the Red Rock Bakery and internet cafe. Fresh baked goods and I like the Club Sandwich with black forest ham and bacon on their own multi-grain bread. For desert, cookies including flowerless oatmeal, chocolate chip.

Located just south of Moab on your way to the villa. Get your grilling meats here. They have it all and everything they have is top quality. We like their filets for grilling on the patio and their smoked bacon, but they have whatever you are looking for in the meat department. Say hi to Pat!

This is little independent bookstore with a big selection of books. The name of the store was drawn from one of Edward Abbey's most well-known fiction titles, The Monkey Wrench Gang. His character Seldom Seen Smith was an outfitter, and the name of his company--and hideout--was "Back of Beyond." They specialize in natural history, environmental literature, southwestern guidebooks & maps, Native American books, and Western history. They also carry a wild assortment of science, philosophy, current affairs, rare books, and generally other cool stuff you won't find elsewhere.

Booze is a bit weird in Moab! Beer can be had in grocery stores, but the sale of wine and hard liquor is exclusively the purview of the State of Utah! What! Go figure. And, there is only one State Liquor Store in all of Moab. You might want to call ahead for their hours just so you aren't disappointed, as they close on all state and federal holidays (including "Pioneer Day", bet you never heard of that one). If you are coming from Colorado, I can't tell you to bring it from Colorado, because that would be illegal.

Great hike for a hot summer day. The canyon has year-round water draining north and steep canyon walls that provide some shade. The earlier the better to avoid the heat. The trail ends at Morningstar Arch, about 1.5 miles one way.

Not in a park. East out of Moab, a wonderful natural area, home of the famous Slick Rock Trail for mountain bikers. Lots of roads for jeep and hikers too. Walking along fens of rock overlooking the city. The County maintains a gate and there is a small fee for access; ask the gate keeper where to park to walk a fen.

Located within Arches National Park, the Broken Arch trail is one of my favorites. The trail begins at the back of the Devil's Garden Campground. The trailhead is marked, and looped trail leads through some nice slot canyons and the Broken Arch before returning to the starting point. I particularly like this trail when the park is crowded, as very few people seem to find it.

Flat Pass (also known as SteelBenderTrail) can be ridden from the condo (3334) as a 10-mile point-to-point with a shuttle, or a 19-mile loop (with the return on paved road). The 10-mile version is strenuous; the 19-mile loop is a killer. Matt (nearest the camera), Dominic Bria, and Mike climb a section of rock. The trail rolls up a ledge of Kayenta sandstone underlying the domes and fins of multi-colored Navajo Sandstone.

Sightseeing

A short two hour drive on paved roads, this scenic drive climbs out of the Spanish Valley onto the western shoulder of the LaSal Mountains before descending into Castle Valley to meet River Road for the return to Moab. The road offers incredible views over the Moab Valley and Canyonlands National Park. Touring up through the alpine evergreens and aspens, various trailheads can be accessed. While driving, visitors will find routes to La Sal Mountain Pass, Geyser Pass, Oowah Lake, Warner Lake and down to Castle Valley. Moab and the surrounding area can get unbearably hot during the peak of summer; so many locals and visitors like to head up to the mountains to cool off. Heading south of Moab on Highway 191, take a left turn towards Ken’s Lake and the La Sal Mountain Loop Road. Take a stop at the Lake or continue past the Ken’s Lake turnoff and forward to the La Sal Loop Road.
