Experience traditional boatbuilding techniques at Boathouse 4 or learn the history of Royal Navy armaments at Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower. Step aboard HMS Warrior, the pride of Queen Victoria’s fleet and compare her iron-hull with the steel hull of the only surviving ship from the First World War Gallipoli Campaign, M.33. Portsmouth Historic Dockyard offers a selection of shopping outlets on-site and a variety of eating and drinking establishments, including picnic areas with spectacular views.

Winner of the Blue Flag award for over 30 years and with its soft golden sands and breathtaking views, it is no wonder that Sandbanks is considered one of Britain's best beaches. Sandbanks is a small peninsula crossing the mouth of Poole Harbour. Sandbanks Beach is of the highest quality with fine golden sand and sparkling clean waters, perfect for a family day out at the seaside. The soft sand is ideal for playing in and kids (young and old!) will be able to build sandcastles galore! Sandbanks boasts some great facilities with a large and challenging crazy-golf course situated behind the beach as well as mini golf course. There's also a childrens play area with climbing, swings, sand diggers and sensory play area. If you're feeling a bit sporty then there's watersports and equipment hire available as well as volleyball nets, slackline and table tennis. If you just want to sit back, relax and enjoy the view then Sandbanks Beach is perfect for that too - why not hire a deckchair and parasol?? A number of beach huts are also available for short term hire and annual hire. The promenade offers cafes and shops and there's also a mini road train that gives rides along the seafront. If you are looking for something not so touristy, then Sandbanks beach may be a quieter option. Sandbanks beach and area is naturally beautiful all year round and offers spectacular views towards Studland and Old Harry Rocks. However, not as busy as the main beach at Bournemouth, parking can be tricky, so a fixed taxi or bus maybe the best option. From here you can take the chain ferry across to Studland Bay, or head over to Brownsea Island. Both are part of the National Trust.

Local places worth a visit

Some places worth a visit whilst spending your time in Bournemouth
Studland is a small village located on a peninsula in the Isle of Purbeck and is close to both Swanage and Corfe Castle. The start of the 630 mile South West Coast Path national trail is found at Shell Bay (where the chain ferry crosses the mouth of Poole Harbour) and continues to Minehead in Somerset. Studland is famous for its long, sandy beaches (including a nudist beach), and visitors and locals flock to the area in summer. All the beaches are managed by the National Trust and each has its own car park and facilities. Some of the beaches offer watersports and the local riding stables give riding lessons on the beach at certain times of the year. Old Harry Rocks found near South Beach is part of the Jurassic Coast which stretches for 95 miles all the way to Exeter in Devon. The chalk stacks which make up the group known as Old Harry date back to the Mesozoic era. There is an easy, 1-mile walk from the village to Old Harry and the South West Coast Path. There are a number of places to eat and drink at Studland village including The Bankes Arms or The Pig on the Beach near South Beach, the National Trust café on Knoll Beach, or the Knoll House Hotel nearby. Just under 2 miles along the road from the chain ferry terminal at Shell Bay, you can join the Rempstone Ride cycle route across heath and forest to Purbeck Park - why not then jump on a Swanage Railway vintage train for a trip to Swanage?
