Gardens and Paved Trails

7-minute drive away, this is an easy pit-stop for a quick burst of nature, and a great 30-minute hike for little feet. It is centered around a creek and is quite diverse for its size. Great place to stop after a meal.

The Reed Creek Greenway is a shaded trail that goes through parts of the Botanical Gardens and UNC, as well as the Montford Historic neighborhood. Our favorite paved path in Asheville! It’s 3.8 miles out and back, and has a few inclines; great workout for running or stroller-pushing!

The French Broad River Greenway is almost 3 miles out and back and is mostly paved with some small areas of gravel and dirt. This trails connects to the Carrier Park that has access to a big playground as well as a dog park that has separate areas for both big and small dogs. Another great walk! This trail is currently expanding, making it another great option for running.

Hikes

Great hike for families at 1.5 miles, we traversed this with a large group and a mix of ages from 2 to 12, and it was very diverse in a short amount of time. It's in the Pisgah National Forest, and is beautiful from start to finish, ending at a large but low volume waterfall that is easily traversible behind the falls! From the intersection of Hwys 64, 280 and 276 north near Brevard, drive north on Hwy 276 north through the Pisgah Forest entrance. Drive about 6.5 miles (one mile past Looking Glass Falls) and look for a small parking area on the right - just before a stone bridge. If you are coming from the Blue Ridge Parkway, get off at the Hwy 276 exit and drive south for 8.2 miles, cross the bridge and pull off on the left. The trail begins on the bridge side of the info board. Cross the wooden foot bridge. Dog friendly.

Catawba Falls is a fairly easy 3-mile roundtrip hike (my 2- and 4- year olds did it with minimal assistance) to a waterfall and wading pool. One of my favorite hikes! Go during the week early or late to avoid crowds.

Craggy Pinnacle Trail is a 40-minute drive via the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the parkway sure does live up to its hype. This windy mountain road climbs up the Blue Ridge with epic views along the way. Well worth the drive (and potential car sickness). Craggy Pinnacle has a very unique topography that ranges from moderate rainforest to open meadows with 360 degree views. Our favorite hike so far! Bring lunch and snacks, and a light sweater - it’s a few degrees colder up there! Dog-friendly.

First of all, the drive to Dupont State Forest in the fall is spectactular! The colors, mountains, sprawling farms in residential neighborhoods, the air; everything is simply eye candy. While there are countless hike and bike trails, the only one I've ventured is the Three Waterfalls Hike, a 4.5 mile trail that views 3 waterfalls: High Falls, Triple Falls (home to movies like Hunger Games and Last of the Mohicans), and Hooker Falls. It is fairly easy but steep in some places, so there are moments you have to catch your breath. The hike departs from the High Falls trailhead off Stanton Road, located near the park’s visitor center. Google Dupont State Forest Three Waterfalls Hike for more specific information.

Sliding Rock is a must for first-time travelers to Asheville. Nature's waterslide! Beware: it might be super hot, but the water stays a nice fresh average of 55 degrees even in the midst of summer!

Great option close to the house (20-minute drive). Beautiful gardens to stroll; an easy activity for a family with varying ages and interests. Winter Lights at the Arboretum is impressive and so much fun for everyone; hopefully it will return to the walking event it was pre-Covid.

Check if trails are open

Always check to see if the trails you want to trek are open. Some close from time to time due to maintenance or weather. This is especially important in winter months, when the Blue Ridge Parkway closes due to hazardous conditions.
