Sightseeing

Just east of Picton is Lake on the Mountain. As the name implies it’s a deep circle of water that sits some 200 feet above Lake Ontario, at one of the highest points in the county. Long the subject of local legends, and with no obvious source, its waters are now thought to be continually replenished by underwater fissures in the rocky bottom. It offers spectacular cliffside views of the county and the Bay of Quinte. You’ll also spot the free ferry that runs from Glenora to the mainland. A ferry in one form or another has been plying the same route for more than two centuries. It marks the eastern end of the Loyalist Parkway on the island, picking up again on the mainland on the other side. You’ll find our favorite end of day patio here at the Miller’s House. Usually open and serving till sunset, if it’s not dark yet you’ve still got time!

Prince Edward County has the highest concentration and abundance of migratory birds anywhere on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario. The Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory, on the southeastern tip of the island, is a meeting point of several bird flyways, with many of the 130 species in spring coming from Central and South America — the wooded reserve is their first landing and feeding spot after a journey of perhaps 50 miles over Lake Ontario’s open waters. This part of the island, open to visitors year-round, is designated an Important Bird Area as well as a Monarch Butterfly Reserve. Skip the crowds at this remote spot (make sure to pack a lunch) and enjoy lighthouse and cliff hikes as well as walking the shale beach for an incredible 3 sided view of Lake Ontario. Call ahead to make sure the information building is open and bird banding is underway if you want to share that experience.

Tim and Lesley Snyder, the owners of Cabin Fever Kayak, both illustrators, moved to the county a few years ago, “having done that whole soul-destroying Toronto thing,” as Mr. Snyder said. He still moonlights as a syndicated political cartoonist. With watercraft manufactured locally (Clearwater Design kayaks to buy your own), they launch boats from next to their barn on the Black River, a half-mile upstream from where it enters Lake Ontario. The river’s source is at Milford, where large schooners were once built, a peaceful winding paddle past pretty marshland.

While Sandbanks has been the traditional tourist draw, the rest of the county is almost as pretty, carved by long reaches of water and overlaid by green hills, farm stands and small towns with thriving main streets. Renting a bike to get off the beaten path is a great way to see it all without the crowds. Running parallel to the Loyalist Parkway in Bloomfield is the Millennium Trail bike path, recently upgraded to packed gravel. It traverses much of the county, roughly parallel to the Parkway. (Rentals are available at Bloomfield Bicycle.) The trail crosses farms, streams and waterfowl nesting places. The county is also a road-biker’s paradise, and hosts a number of popular cross-island events each year.

Sandbanks Provincial Park, the largest freshwater barrier beach and dune system in the world. It’s a natural wonder, with wide stretches of white sand, dunes that are five stories high, dappled green and blue water overlaying a gently sloping bottom. The beaches are great for swimming, the dunes for exploring. With the infinite-looking vastness of Lake Ontario before you, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were at the ocean. Check ahead before heading out, in the summer our Parks can fill up fast and traffic lineups can be quite long.

Base 31 (formerly Loch-Sloy Business Park, and prior to that Camp Picton), was built in 1940 as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP). Seven hundred and one acres of land on the outskirts of Picton became the home of the Royal Air Force (RAF) where many young British, Canadian and American men trained as combat pilots. After World War II, the site was used as a storage and equipment maintenance centre for the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). Later, the Royal Canadian School of Artillery (anti-aircraft) took over the site. The school provided training for anti-aircraft gunners, gunnery radar operators, technical assistants and artillery instructors. By the 1950s, the base was expanded. In the early 60s, the first battalion Canadian Guards, an infantry unit, settled into the camp and became a respected addition to the community and in 1966, were granted the “Freedom of the City,” the highest honour a civilian community can give a military unit. Throughout its military history, the site also housed the AVRO Arrow test models. In 1969, the Department of Defense pulled out of CFB Picton and shortly thereafter the aerodrome and the original BCATP buildings were purchased by the H.J. McFarland Company. The current company purchased Loch-Sloy Holdings Limited from the McFarland family in 1999. By that time, the site had been greatly vandalized and had very little activity occurring in the now industrial site. The current company works diligently to preserve this former World War II air training base. A historical note worth mentioning is that this former BCATP base is the last remaining site of its kind in North America, and possibly the world, with as many original buildings still intact. Today, restored barracks have become home to an art gallery, pottery studio, yoga studio, bridal shop and more. Base31 is also a concert and performance venue.

At the most eastern edge of The County’s south shore lies the Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area, home to the Point Traverse Lighthouse. The fixed red light of the lighthouse began guiding small vessels safely to shore in 1881, in response to pleas from ship captains. The lighthouse’s lamp and reflectors were replaced by a French lens in 1909. Three years later, the Canadian government terminated the lighthouse, but reinstated its light the following year, due to demand. The light was automated in 1941 and received a heritage designation in 2015. The lighthouse can be visited at any time of year, but particularly during spring and autumnal birding events hosted by the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory. Check the Nature Matters site or pamphlet for more information on special walks and talks about the lighthouse. Prince Edward Point National Wildlife Area (NWA) was one of the first sites in Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Protected Areas Network to protect habitat for migratory passerine birds (songbirds). Located at the tip of a long peninsula on the northeast shore of Lake Ontario, at no other location on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario are birds known to occur in such high densities during migration. Over 330 species have been observed, including songbirds, waterfowl, owls and hawks. Composed of a diversity of habitats including hardwood forests, meadows, grasslands and cobble beaches, this 532-hectare NWA is part of the globally significant Prince Edward County South Shore Important Bird Area; used by researchers at the Prince Edward Point Bird Observatory’s Canadian Migration Monitoring Network Station to improve our understanding of bird migration and bird populations locally and globally; an important staging area for migrating bats; part of the International Network of Monarch Butterfly Reserves. Public access is allowed on designated trails, on the road and along the beach. Many activities are permitted within designated areas, including boat launching and docking, hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, photography, wildlife observation, picnicking (no open fires or charcoal barbeques), and swimming. Fishing is permitted (no lead sinkers). A permit is required for activities outside of designated areas. For more information on permits, please contact the Canadian Wildlife Service regional office.

Slickers uses local ingredients in their small batch ice cream; apples from South Bay, Brummels maple syrup and honey from Hogans Apiaries and Honey Pie Hives. The owners pick wild blackberries for the black cap ice cream, which is stunning and delicious. Local garden rhubarb gets combined with ginger for all the taste of spring. Apple pie ice cream with pies from scratch in each a batch, same with the brownies and butter tarts! Even praline is made by hand, with pecans and butter all covered with carmelized sugar. You simply can’t leave the county without a taste of Campfire (burnt marshmallow lovers unite). Visit the OG location in Bloomfield or pop out to the newest Picton location only a block away to grab a pint or two. All the ingredients are clean, no preservatives, no food dyes, all natural, not like commercial soft ice cream.

All those good smells coming from Milford lately? They’re coming from the new PECish Baking Co. Matti Matyasfalvi, baker and self-described breadhead, is turning out bread, croissants, cookies & more every week – made preservative and additive free with local wheats, honey, and butter. Take note – these fresh-from-the-oven treasures sell like, well, hotcakes – so order ahead for best selection. Long-term plans include a café and general store.
