The Youngs River hurtles over a large wall, veiling 54 feet into a pool locked in by large gravel bars. The falls are somewhat unique in that the base is located only about 10 feet above sea level. The falls face north and will only see direct sunlight during the longest months of the year - probably late mid May to mid July. Spray can be quite heavy at the bottom of the falls, but climbing up onto the logs and rocks to the right of the falls will get you out of much of the mist zone (outside of flood conditions).

Fort Stevens was a coastal defense fort and saw active service from the Civil War days to the end of World War II. Fort Stevens State Park, in addition to excellent camping and RV facilities, has many interesting artifacts from its fort days that continue to intrigue visitors. Examples are the reconstruction of the Civil War earthworks – still in progress: Battery Russell, the gun battery in the line of fire from a Japanese submarine during World War II, and the near-by Pacific Rim Peace Memorial: Battery Mishler, a one of a kind battery and the underground command post for the Columbia River forts.

There are two main ways to connect with the beach accesses for vehicles at Gearhart. One is to take Pacific Way (at Gearhart's southern end) to reach those streets and various beach spots. The other is at the northern end of town, at Gearhart Lane, following the road around the bend to the golf course and a couple of major resorts and condo buildings. There, you'll find the big access at 10th Street, which is where driving on the beaches of Clatsop County begins. From here, you can drive all the way up to Fort Stevens State Park and the Wreck of the Peter Iredale along the sand, and even at higher tides you're usually fairly safe from the water. From here, you wander all the way past Sunset Beach and Del Rey Beach, until at some point farther north, deeper into Fort Stevens State Park. This section of Gearhart is likely not the most pristine in nature because of the cars. It's also a bit unpleasant to have to watch for traffic while on a pleasant, calming stroll along the beach. However, there don't appear to be any traffic incidents involving pedestrians by cars driving along the beaches of Gearhart. Driving south of here is prohibited.
